The Super Eagles are bidding to reach the World Cup for the first time since 2018.
Nigeria’s match against Congo DR tonight in Rabat will determine a 2026 World Cup spot for an African member in the inter-confederation playoff.
The Leopards are aiming for just their second trip to the World Cup, while the Super Eagles are hoping to make it there for a seventh time.
This will be these teams’ first competitive match. Moreover, they haven’t played since a 1-1 friendly stalemate in 2018, which is still the only tie in the previous six meetings, with Congo winning three and the Super Eagles winning two.
After captain Chancel Mbemba’s goal in stoppage time gave the Leopards a hard-fought victory over Cameroon on Thursday, the Congolese advanced dramatically to reach the playoff final.
Nigeria’s squad, ranked 19 spots higher on FIFA’s current World Rankings, stands in the way of a major accomplishment. But the Leopards, who are ranked 60th, may not be too worried going into this match as outsiders after facing Cameroon, who are ranked 54th.
