Nigerian amateur footballer earns trial with Sevilla after going viral

Ola Great could line up for his dream trial with the Spanish club.

After petitioning the club on X (formerly Twitter), a Nigerian amateur football player may have secured a trial with Sevilla. Ola Great wondered how many retweets it would take to get a trial with the Spanish team when he tweeted tagging the Spanish powerhouses on Tuesday. “100k” was Sevilla’s response. At the time of writing, the tweet had received 117k retweets.

It was not anticipated for the tweet to go viral. However after his post a little more than twenty-four hours later, on Tuesday, Ola had accumulated over 100,000 reposts on the post, surpassing the number of reposts needed to be considered for a club’s trial.

Owing to the involvement of thousands of netizens, particularly influencers, who subsequently expanded the post’s reach, Ola acted right away and the post swiftly became popular on X.

Some internet users, however, expressed their disapproval of the remark and asked Sevilla to talk just about Ola’s target.

“Thank you to everyone that made this happen; thank you, Twitter NG, for this,” Ola said in a follow-up post.

“My heart is full of so many emotions right now.”

Sevilla have subsequently appreciated the outstanding response with a post of their own that provided a link to a 2024 statement regarding the formation of a new club mostly for foreign players who are 18 years of age and older.

The statement said: “Sevilla FC will have a new team within its competitive structure. It will be a squad with a strong international dimension and will compete in the Tecera Andaluza, in the ninth tier of Spanish football.”

However, it will be interesting to see if the Nigerian player makes the cut. Ultimately after securing a trial he will travel to Spain to prove himself if he has all the qualities to become their player. It will be a proud moment for him if he aces the trial as he will get to play in one of the top leagues of football.
