The Belgian midfielder was surprised after hearing cricket’s popularity in Europe.
Manchester City sensation Kevin De Bruyne refused to accept that cricket is the second most popular sport in Europe, after football, during a quiz game.
During a club quiz show dubbed “AI Showdown,” the midfielder and his City teammate James McAtee were challenged to list the top five sports that Europeans take part in.
However, the former Chelsea player was shocked and refused to recognize cricket’s popularity when the AI list showed it to be the second most popular sport after football, with basketball, tennis, and Formula 1 following.
“How can cricket be second on the list? That is a lie,” said Kevin De Bruyne, who hails from Belgium. “I do not know anybody in Europe who watches cricket, let’s be honest.”
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has 33 European members. Cricket’s growth, however, is poor outside of England. In addition to England, Scotland and the Netherlands have participated in the Cricket World Cups thus far.
With T20 cricket becoming more popular in these nations, Hungary and Serbia are the ICC’s newest members.
Despite not being as popular as football, cricket is still one of the most-watched sports. South Asians who reside in European nations frequently play important roles in the formation of teams in non-traditional nations.
In complete disbelief, Kevin De Bruyne couldn’t believe and refused to accept the presenter’s assertion that cricket is the second most popular sport in Europe. Who? People from Europe? “No,” he responded.
He said that he watches every other sport on the list, with the exception of cricket. When Kevin De Bruyne star answered, “Yeah, I watch everything except cricket,” the entire studio erupted in laughter.
Kevin De Bruyne will leave Man United at end of season
Following a ten-year tenure with Manchester City playmaker confirmed that this season will be his final season with the Premier League team and he will then continue his search for a new club, with Saudi Arabian and Major League Soccer teams keen on signing him.
