Norway have never recorded a win against Senegal

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is currently underway, and after a successful conclusion of round one, teams are gearing up to play their second game of the tournament. This World Cup has already given us some surprising results, and fans are looking forward to what this competition still has in store for them. The fourth game from Group I will feature an interesting clash between Norway and Senegal.

Norway won 4-1 against Iraq in their opening matchday and already have a foot inside the knock-out stages of the competition. Ståle Solbakken has done an incredible job with the national team in recent years as he led them to qualify for the World Cup after a 28-year absence. Norway are on a four-game unbeaten run right now and have the talent to upset all the teams that are considered better than them.

Senegal, on the other hand, had a difficult start to the tournament as they lost 3-1 against 2022 World Cup finalists, France. They displayed their quality in the first half, but they were utterly blown away by Didier Deschamps’ side during the second half. A win will be the only plausible result for them, as a draw or a loss will most likely eliminate them from the tournament. Before the commencement of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Senegal lost 3-2 against the USA and played a 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia.

This game will be one of the most crucial fixtures of Group I and in this article, we will take a look at five key battles to watch out for during the game.

5. Kristoffer Ajer vs Nicolas Jackson

Despite Nicolas Jackson’s disappointing performance against France, Senegal will be relying on their striker to bounce back against Norway. Nicolas Jackson needs to improve his finishing, but the work he does off the ball is simply outstanding. Kristoffer Ajer will have to keep check of him throughout the game as Nicolas Jackson has the ability to punish the opponents if given an opportunity.

4. David Møller Wolfe vs Ibrahim Mbaye

Ibrahim Mbaye scored Senegal’s opening and so far the only goal in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He has won back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles with PSG, and his importance in the squad has only increased. Senegal likes to attack from wide areas, and David Møller Wolfe will be given the task to contain one of their most threatening winger.

3. Julian Ryerson vs Sadio Mané

Senegal’s captain and number 10, Sadio Mane, is their most effective player. He has led them to continental glory twice in his illustrious career and will be crucial for them in this must-win game against Norway. Despite losing some of his pace in recent years, Sadio Mane has the intelligence to beat his marker, and containing him will be a tricky task for Julian Ryerson, who also had a great 2025/26 season with Borussia Dortmund.

2. Martin Ødegaard vs Idrissa Gana Gueye

The second entry on our list is a contest from the midfield between Martin Ødegaard and Idrissa Gana Gueye. Both players have very different playing styles but are equally important for their respective teams. Ødegaard is an Orchestrator who likes to link up with his teammates and create spaces from deep areas. Idrissa Gana Gueye, on the other hand, is a strong and physical box-to-box midfielder who covers every blade of grass.

1. Erling Haaland vs Kalidou Koulibaly

Topping our list is a colossal clash between two physical specimens, Erling Haaland and Kalidou Koulibaly. Both players mainly rely on their physicality to get the better of their opponents, and it will be interesting to see their clash in the upcoming game. Their tussle will be a great sight, especially during the set-piece situations. Erling Haaland has already scored two goals in the tournament and will be eager to score and lead his nation to the next round.
