Olympique Marseille close in on signing of Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood
Greenwood spent the last season on loan at Getafe.
French club Olympique de Marseille have reached a verbal agreement with Manchester United for the permanent signing of forward Mason Greenwood.
After reported weeks of long and detailed negotiations, the two clubs have agreed on a potential deal structure wherein the Red Devils will receive €26 million as a fixed fee, €5 million in add-ons and 50% of any future sale fixed by a sell-on clause.
With the total package of the deal worth around €31 million, Olympique Marseille have reportedly booked a private flight for Greenwood with all documents ready to be signed and medicals scheduled upon arrival.
The 22-year-old winger spent the last season out on loan at Spanish side Getafe, where he recorded an impressive 10 goals and six assists across all competitions, guiding the club to a comfortable 12th place finish in LaLiga.
Ever since his professional senior debut, Greenwood was destined for a successful career at his boyhood club, but following off-the-field legal battles in recent years, his future at Manchester was put in jeopardy. Also due to these concerning issues, the Manchester United academy product has just earned one cap so far for the England national team.
With the majority of the fan base still vocally against Greenwood, the Manchester United hierarchy decided to part ways with the forward this summer in order to not attract unnecessary negative media attention at the time of a critical club rebuild both from the inside and outside.
Following a disappointing 2023–24 campaign, wherein Olympique Marseille finished eighth in Ligue 1, the club hierarchy managed to make an ambitious appointment in former Brighton & Hove Albion boss Roberto de Zerbi for the upcoming season, beating the interest of several other top clubs in the process.
With a mastermind coach like De Zerbi at the helm of affairs, Les Olympiens have already been aggressive on the market with shrewd signings of Copa America star Ismaël Koné from Watford and defender Bamo Meïté from FC Lorient, with Mason Greenwood up next.
On the other hand, Manchester United shouldn’t have any concern in letting go of Greenwood. They have already bagged themselves a solid forward in the name of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for a complete package of €42.50 million.
