Pep Guardiola has chimed in on the Lionel Messi vs Lamine Yamal comparisons by challenging Barcelona’s newest sensation.
Yamal, who just turned 18, is already a record-breaking performer in his own right, having won both the European Championship and LaLiga. He is regarded as a future winner of the Ballon d’Or.
Given that both players left the renowned La Masia academy system, comparisons to Messi were inevitable, given their potential. Yamal has been making every effort to stay out of that conversation.
Guardiola understands why, as the former Barcelona manager told GQ about the most talked-about comparison currently in world football:
Guardiola speaks on Yamal and Messi’s comparisons
“I think Lamine Yamal should be allowed to develop his career. And when he’s been playing for 15 years, we’ll decide if he’s better or worse.
“Let him develop his career. And the fact that he’s being compared to Messi is a big deal. Like if you compare a painter to Van Gogh, they’ll say, wow, he’s not bad, it’s a sign he’s good. And that comparison is a sign he’s good. But we have to let him develop his career. And we’ll see.”
With the current Manchester City manager never hiding the fact that he views the Argentine legend as the best player of all time, Guardiola continued, saying,
“Messi has been a big deal. 90 goals in one season, for 15 years, nonstop, without injury. That’s a big deal. Let him go. Let him go.”
Yamal will have a hard time escaping Messi’s shadow anytime soon after agreeing to a lucrative new contract with Barcelona, because he inherited the No. 10 shirt, which the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner formerly wore with such distinction.
