City will travel to the Emirates to play Arsenal on Sunday.
As Manchester City cautiously manages Rodri’s minutes on the pitch, Pep Guardiola is unsure if he will be prepared to play against Arsenal this weekend.
After sustaining a knee injury in a match against the Gunners nearly exactly a year ago, the Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder missed the majority of the previous campaign.
He made a comeback before the conclusion of the 2024-25 season and then made a few appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer. But he was sidelined again at the beginning of the 2025-26 campaign.
Guardiola comments on Rodri’s fitness and the team’s selection against Arsenal
After an hour of Thursday’s 2-0 Champions League triumph over Napoli, the 29-year-old requested to be taken off the field in the 60th minute.
“I don’t know yet… It’s better we see day by day. Of course, he came through a tough injury; you have to be alert, and we will decide on Sunday.”

On his team selection:
“We’ll see what we have to do and how [many] players are fit, and we try to be a better team than last season, especially in the last 20-25 minutes.”
Meanwhile, John Stones has returned to grass training and could be on the bench against Arsenal after the centre-back suffered an injury in the new season.
City’s start to the new season hasn’t gone to plan after they picked up only two wins in four games and two defeats. However, their win against Manchester United should be a turning point in the season ahead of another tricky fixture against the Gunners.
What injury did John Stones suffer?
He had a knock which led to his omission from the England squad, but he is back to grass training.
Is Rodri not fully fit?
The midfielder isn’t playing the full 90 minutes yet as he continues to gain full fitness.
How many games have City won this season?
They have won two PL games out of four matches.
