Many star players could leave the Premier League champions this summer.
Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are looking to bolster their star-studded squad even more this summer in order to successfully defend their crown in the upcoming season.
The Citizens have already completed the signing of talented Brazilian winger Savinho on a five-year deal from French side Troyes for a total package of €25 million. However, the club is not done yet, with potential more incomings expected in this transfer window.
On the other hand, there is also room for potential outgoings from the club, with the Sky Blues looking to comply with the stringent Financial Fair Play Rules of the league. With that said, here are the five players who might leave Manchester City this summer:
Kalvin Phillips
One of the favourites to exit the Etihad Stadium this summer is none other than defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Ever since his €50 million switch from Leeds United in 2022, Phillips has failed to cement himself as a regular starter at Manchester City.
Owing to his disappointing performances, poor fitness levels, and worrying injury track record, the 28-year-old midfielder was sent out on a six-month loan to West Ham United last season with a potential option to buy.
However, Kalvin Phillips’ catastrophic loan spell resulted in him coming back to his parent club. The City board are actively looking to sell the English international, with plenty of clubs interested in the player.
João Cancelo
At one point in his Manchester City career, João Cancelo was deemed one of the best fullbacks in world football. However, due to a falling out with manager Pep Guardiola, Cancelo has spent the last two seasons on loan at Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona, respectively.
Despite relatively successful loan spells, neither club was able to sign the 30-year-old right-back on a permanent deal due to the Premier League side’s high asking price. City will hope to finally offload João Cancelo this summer in order to not lose out on more value for the player.
Ederson
Even with Manchester City not looking to actively sell the player this summer, Ederson has been a hot transfer target for clubs in the Saudi Pro League.
In his seven-year stint at the Etihad so far, Ederson has consistently been one of the best goalkeepers in the world, winning multiple Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy.
After winning it all with the Sky Blues, the 30-year-old shot-stopper is keen on a move to Saudi Arabia in pursuit of a fresh challenge. With clubs such as Al-Ittihad interested in signing the player, the City hierarchy will not prove to be an obstacle if Ederson desires to move away from the club.
Julián Álvarez
Despite recently signing a new long-term contract with the club, Julián Álvarez could well and truly be on the move this summer in search of regular first-team football.
With goal machine Erling Haaland as his competition, Álvarez will hope to secure a move to a club where he is the focal point in attack. Ever since his bargain €22 million switch to the Citizens in 2022, the 24-year-old forward has been sensational both at the club and country levels.
With top teams such as Atletico Madrid keen on acquiring his services, the 2024 Copa America winner is definitely the one to watch out for in this transfer window.
Kevin De Bruyne
One of the players that the Premier League champions would be desperate to keep hold of this summer is their star playmaker Kevin De Bruyne. In his nine seasons as a Manchester City player, De Bruyne has already cemented himself as one of the greatest midfielders in world football.
In recent interviews, the 33-year-old midfielder has openly talked about the possibility of playing in the Saudi Pro League owing to the lucrative contractual deals it offers.
Having achieved it all with Manchester City, at the club level, Kevin De Bruyne could definitely look to secure the big-money move, with clubs such as Al-Ittihad keeping a close eye on the developments of the player.
