Raphinha joins the list of elite for most goals involvement in the competition.

Barcelona are having a wonderful 2024–2025. They were serious candidates in Europe’s Champions League, they won the Copa del Rey final, and they are at the top of LaLiga. They are aiming for an unprecedented double at the moment under Hansi Flick.

A revitalised Raphinha is leading the charge and is having a memorable season, particularly in the UEFA Champions League. The Brazilian’s goals and assists have propelled him up the scoreboard for the most goal contributions in a single Champions League season. He played a significant role in Barça’s continental success up to the semifinal.

How close does he come to shattering the record, though?

5. Lionel Messi – 19: Barcelona, 2011-12

In 2011–12, Lionel Messi had his most successful Champions League season, tallying 14 goals and dishing out five assists. In a 7-1 victory over Bayer Leverkusen, he became the first player to score five goals in a single game, making it one of the competition’s most memorable individual performances.

Barcelona’s campaign ended tragically when they were eliminated by Chelsea in the semi-finals. However, until Raphinha’s incredible efforts in 2024–2025, Messi’s record of most goals involvement in a single Champions League season at the club remained unrivalled for more than ten years.

4. Robert Lewandowski – 20: Bayern Munich, 2019-20

With 15 goals and five assists in just 10 games as Bayern easily won the Champions League, Robert Lewandowski nearly matched Ronaldo’s record of most goals involvement in a single Champions League season in 2019–20. The Bavarians were the only team in European Cup history to win every single game on their way to winning the cup.

The shortened schedule that season, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, only serves to highlight Lewandowski’s accomplishment. Lewandowski had fewer games than normal to accumulate his total because ties were one-off matches instead of two-leg matches starting in the quarterfinals

3. Cristiano Ronaldo – 20: Real Madrid, 2015-16

Ronaldo, who scored 16 goals and provided four assists as Real Madrid defeated Atletico in the final (again) to win the European championship, gets another entry.

In 2015–16, Ronaldo achieved three hat-tricks, setting a record for the most hat-tricks in a single Champions League season. Two of those were against Malmö and Shakhtar Donetsk in the group stage, and the other was against Wolfsburg in the second leg of their quarterfinal match.

Ronaldo won his third UCL championship during this year, and Madrid won their second of three consecutive titles under Zinedine Zidane.

2. Raphinha – 20: Barcelona, 2024-25

A fresh name in the elite of Europe. In 2024–25, Raphinha has elevated his game to a new level and established himself as a vital component of Barcelona’s attack during a season where they are vying for multiple titles.

With 12 goals and 8 assists in 12 Champions League games so far this season, the Brazilian has already surpassed Lionel Messi’s 19 goals in 2011–12 as the highest goal contributions by a Barcelona player in just one season.

The Champions League’s enlarged structure in 2024–25 gave Raphinha two extra group games, which he has taken use of. He still has time to shatter the record of a single Champions League season as we enter the crucial stage of the competition.

1. Cristiano Ronaldo – 21: Real Madrid, 2013-14

The player with the most goal involvements in a single Champions League season is Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese attacker contributed 21 goals overall—17 goals and four assists—during Real Madrid’s 2013–14 victory.

Ronaldo’s penalty kick in the game’s finale against Atletico Madrid helped Los Blancos win 4-1 in extra time and secure their eagerly anticipated 10th European championship.

He still holds the record for most goals scored by a player in a single Champions League season with 17 goals.
