Top five players to watch for Canada vs Bosnia & Herzegovina FIFA World Cup 2026 ft. Edin Džeko, Jonathan David

Both teams are in Group B of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Canada and Bosnia-Herzegovina are set to face off in the opening Group B fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at Toronto Stadium on June 12th, 2026, in Toronto, Ontario. The match is scheduled to kick off at 8:00 PM local time (5:30 AM IST, June 13) as both nations begin their quest for a place in the knockout rounds of football’s biggest tournament.

Canada, who are also the co-hosts for the FIFA World Cup 2026, have produced a series of encouraging performances in recent months despite injury setbacks to key players, while Bosnia-Herzegovina arrive with confidence after their qualification campaign, which included a memorable playoff triumph over Italy.

Jesse Marsch has helped Canada achieve a remarkable transformation since taking charge in 2024, guiding them to a semi-final appearance and establishing them as one of CONCACAF’s most competitive sides.

Meanwhile, Bosnia-Herzegovina head coach Sergej Barbarez has enjoyed an impressive start to his journey, leading them through the European playoffs and securing their second-ever FIFA World Cup qualification.

With both sides possessing quality throughout the pitch, individual moments could ultimately separate the teams. Here are five players who could decide the outcome of this FIFA World Cup clash.

5. Tajon Buchanan (Canada)

With Davies being unavailable for the opening fixture due to an injury, Tajon Buchanan becomes an important part of Canada’s attacking plans. The Villareal winger is one of the quickest and most direct players in the squad, able to change games with a single burst of pace. He has a total of seven goals and one assist in La Liga this season.

His willingness to take on defenders and stretch opposition backlines makes him a key player on the counterattack. His movement in wide areas can create opportunities not only for himself but also for Jonathan David and other forwards. If Bosnia struggled to contain him in one-on-one situations, he would have a huge impact on the outcome of this fixture.

4. Ermedin Demirović (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Ermedin Demirović, who plays for VfB Stuttgart, had a strong Bundesliga campaign before preparing for the World Cup. The versatile attacker scored 12 league goals and provided 3 assists as he continued to establish himself as one of Bosnia-Herzegovina’s most important players.

Unlike Džeko, who operates primarily as a traditional striker, Demirović shows quick mobility and versatility, especially in the final third. He can create chances, link play, and finish opportunities himself, making him difficult for defenders to track. His partnership with Džeko could be Bosnia’s biggest weapon against Canada.

3. Dayne St Clair (Canada)

Dayne St Clair can prove to be just as influential as the attacking unit in determining the outcome of this contest. The goalkeeper heads into the FIFA World Cup after a remarkable 2025 campaign that saw him win the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, recording 10 clean sheets and 113 saves across 30 league appearances.

His shot-stopping ability, command of the penalty area and composure under pressure have made him one of the most reliable goalkeepers of the league and country. Against an experienced Bosnian attack led by Edin Džeko and Ermedin Demirović, St Clair could be called into action on multiple occasions. Games like this are often decided by fine margins, and a crucial save at the right moment could prove just as valuable as a goal.

2. Edin Džeko (Bosnia-Herzegovina)

Very few players in this tournament show the experience and leadership of Edin Džeko. The Bosnia-Herzegovina captain currently plays for German side Schalke 04 and remains his country’s all-time leading goalscorer with 73 goals in 148 international appearances. Despite being in the twilight of his career, Džeko remains a crucial figure for both club and country.

His aerial dominance, hold-up play and ability to deliver in big moments make him Bosnia’s most reliable attacking player. Having played at multiple major tournaments and won trophies across Europe, Džeko’s experience could prove invaluable in this fixture

1. Jonathan David (Canada)

Canada’s biggest attacking threat heading into the tournament, Jonathan David, enters the FIFA World Cup after an impressive campaign at Juventus. Having completed a move from Lille in 2025, the striker adapted quickly to life in Serie A and contributed with 6 goals and 4 assists throughout 34 league appearances in the season.

Before joining Juventus, David left Lille as one of the club’s greatest-ever goalscorers, having registered 25 goals and 12 assists across all competitions during his final season in France.

For Canada, David remains the centre point of the attacking play. His intelligent movement, clinical finishing, and ability to exploit spaces make him a constant threat to the opposition. With Alphonso Davies unavailable, Jonathan David becomes the most crucial player for Canada.
