Ivory Coast vs Ecuador: Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 ft. Amad Diallo & Moises Caicedo

Ivory Coast did not qualify for the last two editions of the World Cup.

In the second match of Group E at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Ivory Coast will take on Ecuador on June 14 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, USA.

The fixture marks a special occasion for Ivory Coast, who return to football’s biggest stage after failing to qualify for the previous two editions of the tournament. Ecuador, meanwhile, featured at the 2022 FIFA World Cup but were unable to progress beyond the group stage and will be aiming for a stronger campaign this time around.

With an African side facing a South American opponent, this contest is expected to be a physical and fiercely contested encounter, with plenty of crunch challenges expected across the pitch. Here are five players who could have a major say in determining the outcome of the game.

5. Franck Kessie

Ivory Coast captain Franck Kessie is the most experienced player in the squad, having earned more than 100 international caps and ranking fifth on the country’s all-time appearance list. The former AC Milan and Barcelona midfielder is also coming off an impressive domestic season with Al-Ahli in the Saudi Pro League.

Kessie is a tireless presence in midfield and uses his physicality and aerial strength to dominate battles in the center of the pitch. His defensive work rate is exceptional, while his ability to make late runs into the penalty area regularly adds goals to his game. He is also capable of driving the ball forward from deeper positions and creating opportunities for teammates, making him one of Ivory Coast’s most influential midfielders.

4. Willian Pacho

Willian Pacho has established himself as one of the finest defenders in Europe over the last two seasons. He has played a vital role in Paris Saint-Germain’s recent domestic success and back-to-back UEFA Champions League triumphs.

The center-back may appear calm and unbothered on the pitch, often chewing gum throughout matches, but he consistently delivers top-level performances in defense. Blessed with excellent recovery pace, Pacho frequently steps out of the backline to win possession higher up the field. A modern center-back in every sense, he is equally comfortable defending and building attacks from the back with a sense of assurance.

3. Yan Diomande

Yan Diomande is currently one of the most sought-after young talents in European football and could further enhance his reputation with a strong World Cup campaign playing for Ivory Coast. At just 19 years of age, the winger is a technically gifted attacker who prefers operating from the left flank.

He is coming off a breakthrough Bundesliga season in which he scored 12 goals and provided nine assists in 33 appearances. His elite dribbling ability, blistering pace and clinical finishing make him a complete attacking package and a nightmare for defenders to contain.

2. Moises Caicedo

One of Ecuador’s greatest strengths is the presence of Moises Caicedo in midfield. Despite being only 24 years old, the Chelsea midfielder has already made more than 60 appearances for his national team and currently ranks second in the squad for international caps behind Enner Valencia.

Caicedo’s strengths are well known throughout world football fans. Operating in a deeper midfield role, he excels at winning duels, recovering possession and breaking up opposition attacks. His ability to regain the ball and immediately launch transitions makes him one of Ecuador’s most important players. Comfortable under pressure, he often retains possession with remarkable composure despite intense pressing from opponents.

1. Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo, who plays for Manchester United in the Premier League, is coming off a season that fell below the standards he set for himself, registering just six goal contributions after producing 21 the previous campaign. Although primarily a right winger, Diallo’s versatility allows him to operate anywhere across the frontline and even as a wing-back when required.

Since becoming a regular in the Ivory Coast setup in late 2025, Amad has consistently been one of their most dangerous attacking outlets. His low center of gravity and dribbling ability make him extremely difficult to stop in one-versus-one situations. He combines well with overlapping full backs, creates chances from wide areas and possesses the ability to cut inside and test goalkeepers with his shooting.

He has recorded six goal contributions in his last eight appearances for Ivory Coast, including a recent goal against France.
