South Africa vs South Korea: Top five players to watch out for in FIFA World Cup 2026 ft. Son Heung Min & Oswin Appollis

This will officially be the first-ever meeting between South Africa and South Korea

The action from group A will take us to the Monterrey Stadium in Guadalupe, Mexico where South Africa and South Korea will face off against each other. The group also contains Mexico and Czechia, and it will be interesting to see these teams competing with each other for a place in the knockouts.

South Africa started their campaign with a 2-0 loss against one of the hosts, Mexico. They were trailing in the second game against Czechia as well before Teboho Mokoena scored the equalizer from the spot. South Africa desperately needs a positive result in their last group stage game, as a loss will most likely knock them out of the tournament.

South Korea, on the other hand, started their campaign with a narrow 2-1 win over Czechia. However, their momentum was halted in the very next game as they were handed a 1-0 loss by Mexico. They only need a draw to secure the second-place finish and can challenge Mexico for the top spot with a win.

As there is no shortage of talent on either side, we will take a look at the Top five players to watch in the game between South Africa and South Korea at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

5. Kim Min-jae (South Korea)

Considering what’s at stake, South Korea will rely heavily on their talented center back, Kim Min-jae. He had a fantastic club season with Bayern Munich as he was a crucial part of them winning the domestic treble. He is technical on the ball and can help his team during the build-up. He also possesses the physicality that allows him to win ground and aerial duels consistently. As South Korea have a slim margin of error, keeping a clean sheet will be a priority for them.

4. Thalente Mbatha (South Africa)

As Teboho Mokoena will not be available due to his suspension, Thalente Mbatha will be given the responsibility of being a reliable presence in the midfield. He prefers to drop deep and provide cover for the center backs, which makes South Africa better defensively. Considering the firepower of South Africa, Mbatha will have to operate at his best level during this must-win encounter.

3. Kang-in Lee (South Korea)

Kang-in Lee is the reigning UEFA Champions League winner with Paris Saint-Germain and has brought his great form to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as well. He registered an assist during the opening game of the tournament. He is most press-resistant and masterfully keeps the ball in tight spaces. He can also drift wide and operate as a right winger, which makes his movements and runs unpredictable.

2. Oswin Appollis (South Africa)

The South African winger plays his club football for Orlando Pirates in the South African Premier Division. He registered nine goals and six assists in his 30 league appearances. He is versatile and can play on both wings. He has not made a significant impact at the World Cup so far, but can turn up for this must win game for his country.

1. Son Heung Min (South Korea)

With 56 goals, he is currently the joint top goalscorer for the South Korean national team. Son Heung Min usually operates as a left winger but has played as a sole striker in the first two games. He is a match-winner and can decide a game of is own.
