USA and Paraguay are placed in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

In a normal year, once the domestic football season comes to an end, fans usually shift their attention towards transfer news and pre-season friendlies. This year, however, things are different. It is a FIFA World Cup year, the biggest tournament in world football.

While there has been plenty of controversy off the pitch surrounding the United States of America hosting the tournament, the focus now shifts to the action on the pitch. The competition gets underway in a few hours.

Hosts USA will begin their World Cup campaign against Paraguay on June 12 (GMT) at SoFi Stadium in California, USA. With several star players expected to be in action, here are five players who could have a major impact on the outcome of the match through their individual qualities.

5. Omar Alderete

Omar Alderete plays for Sunderland AFC in the Premier League. He is coming off the back of an impressive season after making the switch to the English top tier from LaLiga ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. One of the most experienced defenders in the Paraguay squad, he is expected to play a key role at the heart of the defence.

With his excellent defending abilities inside the box, he is ranked among the top Premier League defenders for successful defensive contributions. He will be crucial with his aerial dominance and ability to deal with crosses inside the penalty area.

4. Antonee Robinson

After missing the first half of the 2025-26 season with a knee injury, Antonee Robinson has returned to top form ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 28-year-old Fulham left-back recently scored a stunning volley against Germany despite ending up on the losing side.

Strong defensively, Robinson is also one of the most effective full-backs in the final third. He uses his overlapping runs and deliveries into the box to create chances for his strikers. He has a goal and an assist to his name in the last four games for the USMNT.

3. Weston McKennie

Weston McKennie, whose career appeared to be at a crossroads a few seasons ago, has revived himself at Juventus. He is once again performing at his natural best.

The midfielder brings energy, intensity and tenacity to midfield through his work rate and aggressive pressing. It is something that is non-negotiable in a Mauricio Pochettino system.

McKennie also offers significant tactical flexibility to both the USA team and Pochettino. His ability to play in multiple midfield roles and even feature in both attacking and defensive wide positions will be critical.

2. Miguel Almiron

Miguel Almiron, now playing in Major League Soccer for Atlanta United FC, will be one of the players most familiar with the conditions in the United States. Since joining the MLS from the Premier League, he has registered 13 goal contributions in 39 appearances.

His pace and finishing ability on the counterattack will be a key weapon for Paraguay going forward. Almiron has always been a purple-patch player, dating back to his days at Newcastle United. If he manages to hit one of those purple patches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, he could prove to be a real threat to every team in the group.

Christian Pulisic, often referred to as Captain America by the football faithful around the world, is the fifth-highest goalscorer in USA history. He has 33 international goals. He has carried much of the team’s attacking burden over the years.

Pochettino will once again be looking to him for inspiration. The AC Milan forward is coming off the back of a strong domestic campaign, scoring 10 goals in 34 appearances. With his effective dribbling abilities and knack for producing moments of brilliance, Pulisic has the quality to change a game on his own.

His performance will directly impact how far the hosts go in the tournament.
