The award is given at the end of the Premier League season.

In the history of English football, few awards carry the same prestige and weight as the Professional Footballers’ Association (PFA) Player of the Year title. Every year, this prestigious honour is granted to the player whose exceptional achievements, skill, and overall impact on the field have gained the admiration of teammates, fans, and experts.

Each champion, from talented midfielders to goal-scoring titans, contributes a unique chapter to the vibrant history of English football, showcasing the variety of skill and the game’s enduring attraction.

Players to have won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year on multiple occasions

7. Mark Hughes – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

He mostly played as an attacker or midfielder during his time as a player. He played for Chelsea, Southampton, Everton, and Blackburn Rovers in addition to Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester United for two stints. Throughout his playing career, he received numerous winners’ medals.

In 1991, Hughes became the first player to be awarded the PFA Players’ Player of the Year title twice.

6. Alan Shearer – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Shearer spent his whole career playing football at the highest level in England. Before joining Blackburn Rovers in 1992, where he became one of Europe’s most prolific goal scorers and won the 1994–95 Premier League, he began his career at Southampton in 1988. Newcastle paid a then-record £15 million to sign him from a local team in the summer of 1996, and the rest is history.

He received a lot of praise for his ability to score goals. The fantastic striker earned the PFA Players’ Player of the Year award twice in 1994–95 and 1996–97, while he was with the Magpies.

5. Thierry Henry – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Thierry Henry was Arsenal’s icon; his goalscoring prowess was unmatchable during his heyday as he led the Gunners to an invincible run and won them the league title. His performance was no ordinary one as he would wreak havoc against opposition defenders and instil fear in them with quick feet and goalscoring attributes.

Henry’s sensational performance was certainly recognised by the league when he won the PFA Players’ Player of the Year a joint-record two times and joined the list of elites.

4. Cristiano Ronaldo – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Cristiano Ronaldo was one of the youngest players to win the award for the first time in the 2006–07 season. He repeated the feat the following year. Following in Henry’s footsteps, he won PFA Players’ Player of the Year twice in a row, which was in two of his most successful seasons while wearing a Man United shirt.

With 42 goals across all competitions and a Premier League and UEFA Champions League double, the 2007–08 season was without a doubt the Portuguese all-time great’s best for United.

3. Gareth Bale – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Harry Redknapp changed Gareth Bale‘s position from full-back to winger for the 2009–10 season. He did not look back, enjoying a string of successful campaigns near the end of his Tottenham tenure. He took home the 2007–08 League Cup trophy with Spurs.

His outstanding individual play gained him two PFA Players’ Player of the Year honours.

2. Kevin De Bruyne – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

The Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne was named the 2019/20 PFA Players’ Player of the Year. He tied Thierry Henry’s milestone of 20 assists in that Premier League season, even though Man City lost to Liverpool in the title fight. Even though his injury limited him to just 25 league matches, the incredible playmaker kept the honour the following season, this time as a league champion with Pep Guardiola’s team.

1. Mohamed Salah – 2 PFA Players’ Player of the Year

Mohamed Salah, a striker for Liverpool who was instrumental in the team’s victory in the Premier League, was one of six players shortlisted on Friday for the Professional Footballers’ Association Men’s Player of the Year award. Salah had previously won Footballer of the Year from the Football Writers’ Association and has a chance to win the PFA Players’ Player of the Year this year.

Though the Egyptian has already won the accolade twice and is no stranger to it, he will be looking to do it again after leading the league in goals scored.
