The 2026 FIFA World Cup is just a few days away from its grand inauguration, with the fans and nations set for the ultimate spectacle.
This edition will be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, marking the competition’s return to North American soil after 32 years. The tournament will feature a record 48 teams instead of the traditional 32, giving wider opportunities to some of the World Cup debutants.
The Portugal national football team is a nation regarded by many as one of the tournament favourites. The side will be entering the competition with huge expectations, having most recently won the 2025 UEFA Nations League title.
Portugal had a mediocre outing in the 2022 campaign. Despite the nation winning a difficult group containing Uruguay and South Korea, they were ultimately eliminated in the quarter-finals by Morocco.
Legendary player Cristiano Ronaldo is set to lead Portugal for the fourth consecutive World Cup. With his appearance, he will also become one of the first players to feature in six different campaigns. The nation earned acclaim after naming Diogo Jota, a Portuguese winger who tragically passed away in 2025, by including the player to an honorary “27th’ spot in the squad.
Portugal are placed in Group K of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, dubbed as an easy pathway for the European side. The group comprises Uzbekistan, who are set to make their World Cup debut, Colombia, securing their spot after finishing 3rd in CONEMBOL qualifiers, and DR Congo, who navigated their way through the Inter-Confederational playoffs to return to their first World Cup in 52 years. Portugal will get their campaign underway on June 17 against DR Congo.
