Will Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. come back stronger after their dismal draw against DR Congo?

Portugal will look to register their first victory of the FIFA World Cup 2026 when they face Uzbekistan in Group K. Roberto Martínez’s side began their campaign with a 1-1 draw against DR Congo and remain well placed in the race for qualification.

The European side had plenty of possession in the first game, but could only manage a point. A victory against Uzbekistan would give Portugal a great morale boost before heading into the final group fixture.

Martínez is set to retain the core of the team that played in the opener. Some senior internationals are likely to continue in key positions as Portugal seek to convert their performances into three points.

Cristiano Ronaldo is likely to lead the way once again with Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias and Vitinha all expected to be involved from the off. Portugal will line up in the 4-3-3 as they are expected to.

Who all will be expected in the starting lineup?

Diogo Costa is likely to be the one to be in Portugal’s goal. The back four will be a mix of Diogo Dalot and Nuno Mendes as the full-backs. Rúben Dias and Gonçalo Inácio look set to be the centre of the defence.

Bernardo Silva, Vitinha and João Neves will be seeing a fair amount of playing time in midfield. The trio are responsible for the technical quality, ball progression, and control in central areas.

The front three are expected to be made up of Pedro Neto, Cristiano Ronaldo and Rafael Leão for Portugal. They bring aggression, speed and innovation.

Ronaldo will be the leader of the side and is expected to lead the line. Leão should be able to dribble well. Neto’s direct running will be supportive in the final third as Portugal seek their first victory of the tournament.
