Portugal vs DR Congo pitch report: Surface conditions revealed ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026 clash

Portugal and DR Congo will meet for the first time in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Portugal are all set to face DR Congo in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the Houston Stadium in Texas on Wednesday, June 17. While Portugal are seen as one of the favourites for the FIFA World Cup title, DR Congo have found their way back into the summer competition after 52 years.
In 1974, DR Congo became the first Sub-Saharan nation to qualify for the coveted tournament. After making history, the Leopards had a tough time securing a berth in the competition for more than 5 decades, but they finally managed to add another chapter of glory to their football history books.
Sebastien Desabre’s men are seeking their first point and maiden win at the tournament, as they will have to pass the big test first. Meanwhile, for Portuguese, things are different. Cristiano Ronaldo will have his final realistic chance to help his side win the tournament.
With very limited success in the FIFA World Cup, Portugal are eager to find the rhyme in the ongoing competition. Seleção das Quinas won the UEFA Nations League last summer, beating Germany away and then Spain in the final. Thus, Roberto Martinez’s side could pose a threat against all the teams they face, but the FIFA World Cup is also known for its unpredictability.

Pitch Report

The Houston Stadium has a custom, natural Kentucky bluegrass surface sourced from Colorado. The stadium is also an enclosed, domed venue, so heavy LED lighting is required for adequate illumination.
Because the roof is closed, the ground offers a fast pitch, which rewards precise passing, quick counter-attacks, and technical ball control. In simpler terms, because of its synthetic nature, the ground helps fast-moving teams that like to make crosses and create counterattacks.
The grass pitch for Houston Stadium arrived only one week before the FIFA World Cup started, and Germany vs. Curaçao was the first game played on it. However, the grass pitch has been well settled in the stadium, but a lot of LED lights will be required for the game.
When and where will the Portugal vs DR Congo game be played?
The game will be played at the Houston Stadium in Texas on Tuesday, May 16.
In which group are these two teams drawn?
They are drawn in Group K of the FIFA World Cup alongside Uzbekistan and Colombia.
