Portugal’s humiliating loss to long-shot outsiders Georgia on Wednesday night saw them suffer a historic giant killing, despite dominating Euro 2024 Group F with one game remaining. This setback somewhat spoiled an otherwise outstanding start to the tournament.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s incredible first goal came within the first two minutes of play thanks to two mistakes made by Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva. A late comeback attempt was unsuccessful at Gelsenkirchen.

Roberto Martínez’s team’s spot in the Euro 2024 round of 16 had already been guaranteed by victories over Czechia and Turkey, so Martinez was happy to use the opportunity to rest many players, including Bruno Fernandes, Ruben Dias, Bernardo Silva and seasoned central defender Pepe.

Only once, in March of this year, Slovenia played the A Selecao in a friendly match. That encounter ended in a 2-0 triumph in Ljubljana. This Monday’s match will mark just a second meeting.

Even getting to this point is a cause for celebration as Slovenia are making their debut at the last-16 stage of a major event, compared to their distinguished rivals who participated 25 times after the group phase.

Matjaz Kek’s team advanced to the round of 16 by holding out for a dull goalless draw against England in their final Group C match. This also extended their unbeaten run to nine games.
