Cristiano Ronaldo will be eager to score in his sixth FIFA World Cup

Portugal have had a tough start to their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign as they drew 1-1 against DR Congo on matchday 1. Uzbekistan on the other hand lost 3-1 to Colombia and are at the bottom of Group K.

The Portugal vs Uzbekistan game will be critical for both nations as a loss/draw will put unnecessary pressure heading into matchweek 3. Here are five key battles on the pitch that will decide the outcome of this World Cup fixture.

Cristiano Ronaldo vs Abdulkodir Khusanov

Cristiano Ronaldo was marked out of the game against DR Congo as the African side effectively had at least one or two players near the 41-year-old throughout the game. Given that his pace has slightly declined over the years, man marking seems to be effective on him.

Abdulkodir Khusanov will have the job of marking the Portuguese legend in their upcoming game. The Manchester City defender is quite physical and this battle may decide the game as Portugal lacked any cutting edge in front of goal with Ronaldo out of the equation against DR Congo.

Nuno Mendes vs Bekhruz Karimov

Nuno Mendes is returning to full fitness and we saw glimpses of what he can do in the 1-1 draw against DR Congo. The Portuguese left back was constantly going up the pitch to help his attackers and he would have also scored a goal if not for the goalkeeper.

Bekhruz Karimov will be the player who will be going up against Nuno Mendes on Tuesday. The 18-year-old had 3 interceptions and 7 recoveries against Colombia and the wing-back seems to be an emerging star for the Uzbeks. If he does well against Portugal, Karimov could even rise to fame overnight.

Vitinha vs Akmal Mozgovoy

Vitinha completed an astonishing 121 passes in the game against DR Congo. However, the worrying point would be that almost none of passes helped to score goals as the midfielder had the expected assist (xA) of 0.06

Akmal Mozgovoy will be at the centre of Uzbekistan’s midfield and will be many one-on-one situations against Vitinha. The Uzbek player had a below average opening game in the FIFA World Cup 2026 and will be looking to do better against Portugal.

Goncalo Inacio vs Eldor Shomurodov

Goncalo Inacio did not play the game against DR Congo, however, he is expected to start against Uzbekistan. Inacio’s presence will become even more important because Ruben Dias is nursing an injury and may not be fully fit against Uzbekistan.

Eldor Shomurodov, the Uzbek striker had a wonderful season with Istanbul Besaksehir, scoring 23 goals in 44 goals. The 30-year-old has 29 international goals in 71 games and he will surely be a menace for Inacio to handle at the back.

Bruno Fernandes vs Otabek Shukurov

Uzbekistan will be playing with five defenders at the back, which means that their midfield will have some space to exploit. Bruno Fernandes failed to thread proper passes forward against DR Congo and this had a direct impact on the result.

The Portuguese midfielder’s role will be very important once again and we could expect Bruno to attempt a couple of long shots as well. The player that will be playing against him would be Otabek Shukurov, who plays with Baniyas in the UAE. Otabek won 75% of his duels against Colombia and expect him to mark Bruno closely on Tuesday.
