Portugal will have to give their all if they are to go and win their first FIFA World Cup title

Roberto Martinez’s Portugal football team came into the FIFA World Cup 2026 as one of the favourites. However, the reigning UEFA Nations League winners have been given a harsh reality check in the group stage.

Though Portugal made it through Group K unbeaten, there is a lot of room for improvement as they finished as the runners-up behind Colombia. Os Navagadores drew their opening game 1-1 with DR Congo, in what was a below-par performance by the former European champions.

A 5-0 win over Uzbekistan did uplift the mood in the camp, however their goalless draw against Colombia to close out their group stage campaign is a warning sign. Portugal were just not creating enough chances; they were dominated by Colombia and had to be saved by Diogo Costa’s efforts in goal.

Going into the knockout stage, Roberto Martinez will need to sort out his team quickly. With no “easy fixtures” here on, Portugal will have to step up their game; if not, suffer another early exit in a major tournament.

As the journey to their first title continues, here is Portugal’s projected route to the FIFA World Cup 2026 final:

Portugal’s Round of 32 opponent – Croatia

Route To FIFA World Cup 2026 final

Portugal will be up against Luka Modric’s Croatia in the first knockout round. Croatia have made it to the final and the semi-final of their last two World Cups and will be looking to punch above their weight once again. While this won’t be an easy game, Portugal do have the stronger squad on paper.

Date, Time, and Location: 3rd July (4:30 am IST) – Toronto Stadium, Canada

Portugal’s Round of 16 opponent – Spain/Austria

If Portugal overcome Croatia, they will face another European opposition in the Round of 16. Os Navagadores will go up against the winner of the Spain vs Austria match, with Spain being the favourites to make it to the round of 16.

This could probably become a rematch of the UEFA Nations League 2025 final, where Portugal beat Spain for the title on penalties.

Date, Time, and Location: 7th July (12:30 am IST) – Dallas Stadium, USA

Who could Portugal face in the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

The quarterfinals fixture could see Portugal go up against either USA, Bosnia, Belgium, or Senegal. All four nations will bring a different challenge to Roberto Martinez’s side.

This will again be a jog down memory lane as Belgium had knocked Portugal out in the 2020 Euros, whereas a 2-2 draw against the USA eventually knocked Portugal out in the group stage of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Date, Time, and Location: 11th July (12:30 am IST) – Los Angeles Stadium, USA

Portugal’s probable opponents in the semifinals of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

If Portugal makes it to the semifinals, they could be facing either Germany, France, Netherlands, or Morocco. While there are other options as well, it is more likely that one of these four teams will make it to the semifinals. Either way, this is not going to be easy.

All possible opponents for Portugal in the semifinal: Germany, Paraguay, Sweden, France, Netherlands, Morocco, Canada, South Africa

Date, Time, and Location: 15th July (12:30 am IST) – Dallas Stadium, USA

While it is a tough path, if “the Navigators” find their way to their first FIFA World Cup final, they will likely meet Argentina, Brazil, England or maybe even Mexico (As the popular fake Simpsons prediction!)

Yes, a Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi clash in the World Cup will now only be possible if both nations make it to the final. Given what both these legends have given and achieved in their careers, this will arguably be the Greatest Final of All Time!

Date, Time, and Location: 20th July (12:30 am IST) – New York New Jersey Stadium, USA
