Manchester City claw back three points to reignite the title race.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City beat Arsenal 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, 19 April, in a Premier League match that swung wildly between moments of individual brilliance and total disaster. Rayan Cherki’s magical goal gave City an early lead. But just moments later, Gianluigi Donnarumma’s howler saw the ball fly off Kai Havertz to hand Arsenal a gift of an equaliser.

From there, the two sides fought for every inch of the pitch before Erling Haaland, inevitably, had the final word.

Cherki opened the scoring in the 16th minute, only for Havertz to pull Arsenal level just two minutes later. The speed of that double-salvo left the Etihad gasping. Even though Arsenal arrived with the confidence of league leaders, they spent much of the first half on the back foot.

City dominated long stretches with 61.8% possession and 15 shots to Arsenal’s six, yet the Gunners held firm until the break. The second half turned into a tighter, more disciplined scrap until Haaland struck in the 65th minute to put City ahead for good.

Arsenal threw everything forward late on and came agonisingly close to snatching a point; Gabriel’s header rattled the post, and Havertz sent a golden opportunity over the bar as the ball simply refused to go in for Mikel Arteta’s side.

City move to 67 points for the season, sitting just three points behind Arsenal. Crucially, Guardiola’s men still have a game in hand, which they’ll look to make count when they travel to Burnley on Wednesday. City are now nine Premier League matches unbeaten, a run that includes their League Cup final win over Arsenal earlier this term.

Their ability to hit top gear at the business end of the season will feel ominously familiar to anyone who has followed the league over the last decade.

Where does the Premier League table stand after Gameweek 33?

Arsenal stay top on 70 points from 33 games, though their lead over City has shrunk to a single win. Manchester United and Aston Villa are tied for third and fourth with 58 points each. Liverpool are in fifth on 55, while Chelsea and Brentford are level in sixth on 48.

At the bottom, Wolves, Burnley, and Tottenham are in serious danger of the drop with 17, 20, and 31 points respectively. Only five games remain to secure their survival.
