Every year Boxing Day has produced many goals in the Premier League.

With many goals scored in the Premier League just after Christmas (26th December) over the years, Boxing Day is one of the most important footballing events.

With all 92 Football League teams juggling hectic commitments, the holiday season is now underway in England.

Football fans flock to watch their team play or follow the action on TV on Boxing Day, which is the day most of these people are excited about the most. These are the top ten Premier League seasons in terms of goals scored on Boxing Day.

10. 2005/06 season – 28 goals

Under Jose Mourinho, Chelsea were at its best during the 2005–06 season, winning the Premier League title handily for the second consecutive year.

On Boxing Day, they struggled to defeat West London rivals Fulham, winning 3-2 at Stamford Bridge with goals from Hernan Crespo, Frank Lampard, and William Gallas.

Seven of the 28 goals produced on Boxing Day that season came from Wigan Athletic’s thrilling 4-3 victory at home against a Manchester City team that were not yet well-known for its financial might.

9. 2021/22 season – 28 goals

Boxing Day, which has become increasingly common in the modern game with games spaced out more, was played by just 12 Premier League teams in 2021–2022. With 28 goals tallied at an average of 4.67 per game, it was a fun day.

At the Etihad, City crushed Leicester City 6-3 with nine goals in total coming from that game, while Arsenal dominated Norwich City, winning 5-0 on the road. On the last day of that season, Pep Guardiola’s team defeated Liverpool to win the championship.

8. 2013/14 season – 29 goals

One of the most well-known Boxing Day matches of 2013–14 took place at the Etihad Stadium and featured a matchup between City and Liverpool, who would ultimately fight for the championship until the very end. Alvaro Negredo scored the game-winning goal as the home team prevailed 2-1 in a close contest.

Newcastle United crushed Stoke City 5-1 at St. James’ Park, and Manchester United defeated Hull City 3-2 on the road after rallying from a 2-0 deficit.

7. 2000/01 season – 29 goals

On the final Boxing Day of the century in 2000, there were enough goals to celebrate—29 goals in nine games—during a season in which United easily won the Premier League for the third time in a row.

West Ham defeated London rivals Charlton Athletic 5-0 at home, while Arsenal defeated Leicester 6-1 at Highbury, led by a hat-trick by Thierry Henry.

Christian Karembeu’s goal gave Middlesbrough a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at home, while Sunderland defeated Bradford City 4-1 on the road.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United team won 4-0 at the Stadium of Light on Boxing Day in 2007 to earn three points away from Sunderland, while Liverpool required a late goal from Steven Gerrard to win 2-1 against Derby County.

5. 2018/19 season – 29 goals

It’s interesting to note that the Premier League has seen 29 goals on Boxing Day five times, including during the 2018–19 season.

On Boxing Day, there were 31 goals in all, which is the second-highest number in the history of the competition for that day. The most notable game was Bolton Wanderers’ 4-3 victory over Newcastle at home.

Liverpool and Manchester United both had home victories over Bolton and Everton, respectively, while Charlton defeated Chelsea 4–2, a result that few anticipated.

With 35 goals recorded in ten matches, the final Boxing Day of the 1990s was the greatest in Premier League history.

One of the day’s surprises was Coventry City’s 3-2 victory over Arsenal, which was secured at Highfield Road by a teenager named Robbie Keane.

While Liverpool and Newcastle drew 2-2 at St James’, with Michael Owen netting both of the Reds’ goals and Alan Shearer and Duncan Ferguson replying for the Magpies; Everton and Spurs won 5-0 and 4-0 at home against Sunderland and Watford, respectively.
