Qatar's Assim Madibo handed five-game ban for tackle on Ismaël Koné

Kone has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
Qatar player Assim Madibo received a five-match suspension on Wednesday. It is for a tackle that broke the leg of Canada midfielder Ismaël Koné during a FIFA World Cup 2026 game.
Madibo received a straight red card for the incident during Canada’s 6-0 win against Qatar in Vancouver last Thursday. The FIFA disciplinary committee stated that the punishment was for significant foul play and that the verdict might be appealed.
Assim Madibo receives a five-game ban after his horrendous tackle

Canada’s first World Cup triumph was overshadowed by Ismael Koné’s injury. It required surgery for a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg.
He was tackled by Assim Madibo from behind in the 51st minute. The teammates surrounding him quickly assumed he had suffered a major injury. The player lay on the ground, grasping his knee and covering his mouth with his palm.
Madibo was extremely shocked. He apologised to Koné in person following the game.
“You can’t even imagine how grateful I am to everyone who reached out and that has me in their prayers,” Koné later posted on Instagram.
The Qatar national team did not immediately reply to a request for comment from the Associated Press.
The punishment is not the most severe given by FIFA during the World Cup. Uruguay striker Luis Suárez received a nine-match penalty and a four-month ban from any soccer-related activities. That was for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
In 1994, Italy defender Mauro Tassotti was banned for eight games for elbowing Spain attacker Luis Enrique. Meanwhile, Qatar have been eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after their defeat against Bosnia & Herzegovina in their last group stage game.
