Qatar look to build on an impressive opening draw in the FIFA World Cup 2026.
Qatar head into their second Group B fixture against co-hosts Canada full of confidence after securing a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Switzerland in their FIFA World Cup 2026 opener. A dramatic stoppage-time own goal helped the reigning Asian champions earn a valuable point. It keeps their hopes of reaching the knockout rounds firmly alive.
Standing in their way are the Canadian side, who are also searching for a maiden World Cup victory after drawing with Bosnia and Herzegovina. With both teams level on one point, Thursday’s clash at BC Place carries huge significance in the race for qualification. Qatar will also be looking to avenge their only previous meeting against Canada, having suffered a 2-0 defeat in an international friendly back in 2022.
With Julen Lopetegui expected to stick with the core of the side that impressed against Switzerland, Qatar will hope another disciplined display can produce a famous result on Canadian soil.

Who all will be in Qatar’s predicted XI?

Julen Lopetegui is expected to retain his preferred 4-2-3-1 setup after a disciplined performance in the opening game. Qatar defended resolutely against Switzerland and were rewarded with a late equaliser. It leaves little reason for the Spanish coach to make wholesale changes.
The standout performer on matchday one was goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada, who produced nine saves and was deservedly named Man of the Match by supporters. His commanding display has firmly established him as Qatar’s first-choice goalkeeper ahead of former Asian Cup Golden Glove winner Meshaal Barsham.
In defence, veteran Pedro Miguel, popularly known as Ro-Ro, is expected to continue alongside Boualem Khoukhi after reaching the milestone of 100 international appearances in the opening fixture. Homam Ahmed should keep his place at left-back, while Ayoub Al-Oui is likely to start on the opposite flank.

The midfield duo of Jassem Gaber and Issa Laye is expected to provide defensive stability, allowing Akram Afif to operate in a more advanced role. The 2023 Asian Cup top scorer remains Qatar’s biggest creative threat and will be eager to register his first-ever FIFA World Cup goal.
The only notable change could come in attack, where experienced striker Almoez Ali is tipped to return to the starting lineup after beginning the opening match on the bench. Qatar’s all-time leading scorer is expected to lead the line. He will be supported by Edmílson Junior and Akram Afif, giving the visitors greater firepower against the Canadian defence.
Qatar predicted lineup: 4-2-3-1
Mahmoud Abunada (GK); Ayoub Al-Oui, Pedro Miguel (Ro-Ro), Boualem Khoukhi, Homam Ahmed; Jassem Gaber, Issa Laye; Edmílson Junior, Assim Madibo, Akram Afif; Almoez Ali.
