Rasmus Hojlund explains why he copied Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic 'Siu' celebration

The Manchester United striker led Denmark to a 1-0 win over Portugal.

Rasmus Hojlund, a striker for Manchester United, has given an explanation for why he imitated the Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal celebration in front of him after scoring against Portugal.

The Danish striker scored the only goal of the match to lead Denmark to a crucial 1-0 win in the first leg of the Nations League quarter-final. Meanwhile, the returning leg will be played on 23rd March in Portugal.

Hojlund, who scored against Leicester City in the Premier League last Sunday for the first time in 22 club appearances, contributed significantly once more while playing for Denmark in the UEFA Nations League.

The Red Devils teammate Christian Eriksen had already missed a first-half penalty in the same match. But Hojlund’s one-off performance was sufficient to give the Danes a decisive victory over Portugal in the first leg of their quarterfinal match.

Hojlund scored and then performed the iconic “Siu” routine made famous by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo. Hojlund explained his reasoning for choosing the celebration in order to allay any claims that he was insulting United Great CR7, who was on the pitch at the moment.

The forward, 22, stated to TV2:

“I’m playing against the world’s best footballer, my idol, and to score and become the winner, it couldn’t be better. It was not to mock him or anything, I’ve always said he has had great importance for me and my football career. Scoring against him and Portugal is huge. I went to see him in 2009, where he scored from a free-kick, and I’ve been a fan ever since.”

When Denmark travel to Portugal for the second leg of their Nations League match on Sunday, Ronaldo will have the opportunity to get even with Hojlund and company. There is still a lot to play for, and Ronaldo, the 40-year-old Al-Nassr star, is adamant about winning more significant trophies in 2025.
