Why wouldn’t they? After all, it led to Real Madrid winning a record 15th Champions League title. More side quest success followed after that. Mbappe who had been flirting with a move to Santiago Bernabéu, which almost seemed like ages, finally arrived. Atalanta, on the other hand, had a ridiculous journey in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League. After overcoming Portuguese giants Sporting CP in the round of 16, they were faced with a mighty task up ahead. The quarter-final saw them face Liverpool.

The Reds who were the competition favourites were put to shame in their own backyard in the first leg. The Italians won 3-0 at Anfield, giving Gian Piero Gasperini’s men a great boost for the second leg. Although they suffered a 1-0 defeat in the reverse fixture, Atalanta were through to the semi-finals.

After edging Marseille 4-1 in the semi-final, the final represented a much bigger battle than Liverpool. They had to find a way to win against an unbeaten Bayer Leverkusen side. The final, which was expected to be in favour of the German side or at least a competitive battle, was almost single-handedly won by Ademola Lookman. Lookman netted a hattrick to give his side a 3-0 win.
