According to reports, Real Madrid are trying to develop Kylian Mbappe into a “free-kick specialist” in order to add another skill to his arsenal for scoring goals.
Over his career, the France international has contributed significantly without taking on set-piece responsibilities. He can be counted on to convert penalties with assurance, but he frequently lets others do the creative work.
That might be about to change with Mbappe scoring Madrid’s first free-kick goal of his career in their LaLiga triumph over Leganes. Since the ball was moved to create a better angle, there have been questions about whether the effort qualifies as a free-kick goal.
Journalist Jose Luis Sanchez has told El Chiringuito: “Within the Real Madrid staff, they want Mbappe to become a specialist in free kicks. That’s why they’ve been working with him for over a month on this type of situation, with the good result he achieved against Leganes.”
Mbappe is enjoying it and plans to use dead-ball situations to his advantage in the coming weeks and months. At the club, plans are being developed to support that cause.
The Frenchman has barely taken free-kicks so far in his career, and adding that quality to his calibre will aid the player to excel in that department, given that Mbappe already boasts plenty of qualities when it comes to scoring goals.
However, Madrid do have enough quality set-piece takers, but given Mbappe’s growing status at the club and with the speed at which he is scoring goals, it might be wise for the club to help Mbappe add another skill set.
During his first season as a “Galactico,” Mbappe has already scored 33 goals for Real Madrid. There is hope for many more to come as Carlo Ancelotti’s team continues to pursue LaLiga, Copa del Rey, and UEFA Champions League title glory.
