Robert Lewandowski set to miss Poland's opening Euro 2024 game
The Poland star is set to miss the opener against the Netherlands.
After getting hurt in his team’s final warmup match against Turkey on Monday, Robert Lewandowski of Poland will be out of his country’s opening match of Euro 2024 against the Netherlands on Sunday.
The White-Reds will play Austria in their second Group D match on June 21. On June 25, they play France in their last group-stage encounter.
The seasoned forward was hurt during Poland’s 2-1 victory over Turkey in an international friendly played in Warsaw on Monday. Lewandowski hobbled off the pitch shortly after the half-hour mark. The injury to Poland’s captain is a major setback for the team, which will play the Netherlands in a matter of days to start their Euro 2024 campaign.
Poland officials said in a statement on Tuesday: “On Monday evening, the Polish national team played a friendly match against Turkey. We present the medical report of the national team doctor, Jacek Jaroszewski, regarding the players who suffered injuries in this match.
“Paweł Dawidowicz suffered a strained quadriceps muscle. In the case of Karol Swiderski, the examination revealed a sprain of the ankle joint without significant damage. After treatment, both players should return to full training within 3-4 days.
“Today, at Enel-Med Szpital Centrum, we examined three players who were injured in the match against Turkey… Robert Lewandowski suffered a torn biceps femoris muscle, which will exclude him from participating in the first match of the tournament. We are doing everything so that Robert can play in the second match, against Austria,” Polish team doctor Jacek Jaroszewski said.

During the game, TVP Sport journalist Mateusz Borek (via Super Express Sport) stated that the Barcelona star’s injury shouldn’t be taken too seriously because Lewandowski left the field as a precaution after experiencing mild muscle strain.
The Poland national team did acknowledge on Tuesday that their captain will miss Sunday’s competition opening against the Netherlands due to a biceps tear on his femoris muscle.
