Deniz Undav is currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart

Roberto de Zerbi, the manager of Brighton, has announced that Deniz Undav will rejoin the team this summer. Due to his strong play this season, Undav is currently on loan at VfB Stuttgart and has gained acceptance into the German team.

According to De Zerbi, “Deniz Undav is coming back,” as reported by The Athletic today. Undav, for his part, has said emphatically that he wishes to stay with VfB—ideally on a permanent basis. However, the Bundesliga team is unable to afford his €40 million buy option.

Under Roberto De Zerbi, Brighton & Hove Albion has scored more goals than they have in their seven years back in the top division. Yet if they had kept Deniz Undav on staff, they most likely would have produced more this season.Coach Julian Nagelsmann gave Undav his first call-up to the Germany squad just hours before the team’s 1-0 home victory over Roma, which nevertheless ended the club’s Europa League journey at the last 16 stage due to the 4-0 loss suffered in the first leg. Undav will play alongside clubmate Pascal Gross in friendlies against France and the Netherlands this month.

The 27-year-old, who proved very productive on loan back in Germany with Bundesliga club Stuttgart this year, is expected to play for the nation that is hosting at the European Championship this summer. In his 30 games for Brighton during his 2022–23 rookie period, Undav achieved eight goals. After joining for £6 million ($7.6 million at the present exchange rate) from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium, where he enjoyed two successful seasons for a team partly controlled by Brighton chairman Tony Bloom, just nine of those thirty were starts.

Undav was worried that he wouldn’t get as much playing time even with the arrival of European competition after Brighton signed fellow striker Joao Pedro from Watford this past summer for a club-record £30 million cost. “It is with some regret we chose to let Deniz go and play,” De Zerbi said of the August loan move to Stuttgart. He was essential to us reaching our objectives last year, but he merits this opportunity.

Now there must be more regret. In 21 Bundesliga appearances for Stuttgart, Undav has scored 14 goals and contributed 19 goals.
