Ruben Amorim feels Harry Maguire 'deserves' England call-up for upcoming matches

Maguire was not picked up in the Three Lions Euro 2024 squad.

According to Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, Harry Maguire should be called up to the England squad because of his leadership abilities.

Maguire, who has 64 caps, was one of the well-known players who did not receive a call-up to Euro 2024 in Germany, where England lost to Spain 2-1 in the final last year in July and ended as runners-up.

The 31-year-old has significantly improved his game for United this campaign, scoring goals against Leicester City in the FA Cup fourth round and Ipswich Town in the Premier League last month.

“If it’s enough is with the national coach. I would be really happy for him, I think he deserves [it],” Amorim told reporters when asked if he thinks Maguire’s form is good enough to be considered by England.

“He is a great guy, I think he needs to still improve because when you are a player you can improve every time and improve a lot of things.”

“But I think his performances in the moment are quite good and you feel he is more a leader now that can help a national team, so I hope he is in the national team in the next games,” added Amorim.

Amorim referring to Maguire as a “leader” is indicative of shifting opinions regarding the defender. It appears that Maguire has returned to the Old Trafford leadership group after Erik ten Hag famously stripped him of the Man Utd captaincy and replaced him with Bruno Fernandes.

He had donned the armband of the captain for an EFL Cup third-round match against Barnsley earlier this campaign when Ten Hag was still in command.

Gareth Southgate resigned from his position after England’s defeat in the Euro final, and Thomas Tuchel, a former manager of Chelsea and Bayern Munich, took over in October. This month, he will choose his first England team for the World Cup qualifying matches against Latvia and Albania.
