Saudi Arabia and Uruguay faced off in their World Cup opener at Hard Rock Stadium.

While Saudi Arabia and Uruguay faced off in a feisty FIFA World Cup 2026 Group H clash on June 15, one thing that attracted attention was the bright pink kit worn by referee Maurizio Mariani during the match.

The Italian match official sported a bright pink shirt and socks along with black shorts. This was a big departure from the standard bright yellow or black kits worn by FIFA-accredited referees and linesmen.

The pink kit is a nod to the city of Miami, which is hosting its first FIFA World Cup 2026 match tonight. The city is synonymous with the colour, mainly due to its large population of flamingos. The pink sunsets are also famous, along with the pink-coloured Art Deco buildings along Ocean Drive on South Beach.

Miami is a special city for the FIFA World Cup 2026 officials since it serves as the official central base camp for the 170 match officials taking part in the tournament, which has been termed “Team One”. All FIFA officials based in the city train at Miami Dade College, wearing pink kits.

As a result, the global football body produced one-off pink shirts for Mariani and his team of assistants for the Saudi Arabia vs Uruguay match.

“Miami is our base camp, so we thought it would be nice to show our appreciation to the city where we’ll live for about two months,” FIFA’s Chief Refereeing Officer and Chairman of the FIFA Referees Committee Pierluigi Collina said earlier. “We chose this ‘pink flamingo’ for the referees’ training material. It’s a sort of recognition.”

The move was backed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who said that it was arranged “to give a little bit of a smile to the city which is hosting us.”

Meanwhile, Uruguay began their FIFA World Cup 2026 campaign against Saudi Arabia after a tumultuous arrival in the host city. The South American giants began the match well but conceded a goal scored by Abdulelah Al-Amri just before half-time.
