Saudi Pro League will have a record number of players at the FIFA World Cup.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in a week, with the excitement for the grandest sporting spectacle at an all-time high.
The 2026 edition is set to be etched in the tournament’s history. The newest campaign is set to be co-hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada. It will be the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries.
It will also mark the tournament’s return to North America after 32 years. It will feature a record 48 teams, up from the previous 32, thereby also increasing the number of matches from 94 to 104.
With the rapid expansion of the tournament, the growth prospects of some lesser-known football leagues have increased significantly. This is the case with the Saudi Pro League (SPL), which, over the past few seasons, has established its position alongside the biggest football leagues.
Backed by immense financial investments, the Saudi top flight has effectively transformed itself into one of the most well-known footballing leagues around the world. Portuguese icon Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the most influential footballing stars, has undoubtedly been the biggest attraction heading into the tournament.
The 41-year-old Al-Nassr star is preparing for a historic sixth consecutive World Cup campaign. He can become the only player to score in six different World Cups. He also had a brilliant domestic season after guiding his club to the Saudi Pro League title.
The forward scored 28 goals during the season. He will be joined by elite talents such as Al-Hilal’s Rúben Neves and Al-Ahli’s English forward Ivan Toney.
