Al-Hilal beat Al-Nassr in the recent 2024 Saudi Super Cup final.

The Saudi Super Cup, a football competition held annually by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation, is currently named “The Diriyah Super Cup” due to sponsorship.

Originally conceived as a two-team tournament in 2013, the Saudi Pro League champions and winners from the King Cup, the current edition has been contested by four clubs since 2022–2023.

The 1978–1979 Saudi Premier League champions Al-Hilal and the 1979 King Cup winners Al-Ahli played a two-leg encounter in 1979. It gave rise to the notion of holding a Super Cup tournament in Saudi Arabia.

The first game, contested in Jeddah, concluded in a 2-2 tie, while Al-Hilal won the second leg, played in Riyadh, 4-1. 20 years later, Al-Hilal, the Saudi Premier League winners in 1997–98, and Al-Ahli, the Saudi Crown Prince Cup champions in 1997–98, squared up in another Super Cup. It was the first game of the first Saudi Founder’s Cup. Al-Hilal won 5-2.

After the 2011–12 season ended, the Saudi Arabian Football Federation formally agreed to start the competition in 2012. The 2011–12 Saudi Professional League champions Al-Shabab and the 2012 King Cup of Champions winners Al-Ahli were scheduled to compete in a Super Cup match.

However, because a suitable date for the game could not be identified, the 2012 Super Cup was cancelled owing to scheduling conflicts.

Al-Fateh, the 2012–13 Saudi Pro League winners, and Al-Ittihad, the 2013 King Cup of Champions winners, participated in the tournament’s official opening in 2013. In the Saudi Super Cup’s inaugural season, Al-Fateh defeated Al-Ittihad 3-2 in overtime.
