Senegal vs Iraq: Five key battles to watch in FIFA World Cup 2026

Nicolas Jackson, Ismaila Sarr and Sadio Mané will look to inspire Senegal as they face Iraq in the Group I clash.

Everything is on the line as Senegal and Iraq prepare for their final Group I encounter at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Senegal have produced spirited performances despite suffering narrow defeats to France and Norway, while Iraq have found life difficult against Norway and France.

With qualification scenarios still hinging on the final round of fixtures, both sides know that only a victory will keep their hopes of reaching the Round of 32 alive.Senegal possess the greater tournament experience and individual quality, but Iraq have shown enough resilience throughout the competition to suggest they can trouble any opponent on their day.

The African side will once again rely on their experienced core, while Iraq will hope their energetic young squad can rise to the occasion.

As both teams prepare for a must-win encounter, several individual battles across the pitch could prove crucial.

5. Ahmed Qasem vs Krépin Diatta

Ahmed Qasem has been one of Iraq’s brightest attacking outlets throughout the tournament. Comfortable operating in wide areas, the winger possesses the pace and technical ability to carry the ball into dangerous positions whenever Iraq transition from defence to attack.

Standing opposite him is Krépin Diatta, whose work rate has made him an indispensable part of Senegal’s system. The versatile wide player contributes at both ends of the pitch, regularly tracking back to support the defence before joining attacks with his pace and intelligent movement.

If Qasem succeeds in isolating Diatta and driving into space, Iraq may create valuable opportunities on the counterattack.

4. Amir Al-Ammari vs Pape Gueye

The midfield battle promises to be one of the most important aspects of the contest. Amir Al-Ammari remains Iraq’s creative heartbeat, tasked with linking defence and attack while maintaining composure under pressure. His ability to progress the ball through midfield will be crucial if Iraq are to build sustained attacking moves.

Pape Gueye offers Senegal a different profile. The powerful midfielder excels at recovering possession, winning physical duels and disrupting opposition attacks before they develop. His energy and defensive awareness provide the platform for Senegal’s attacking players to flourish.

If Al-Ammari can escape Gueye’s pressing and dictate the tempo, Iraq may enjoy meaningful spells of possession.

3. Sadio Mané vs Hussein Ali

Even at this stage of his career, Sadio Mané remains Senegal’s biggest attacking outlet. The experienced forward combines pace, intelligent movement and outstanding decision-making to create chances for both himself and his teammates.

Hussein Ali faces the daunting responsibility of containing one of Africa’s greatest players. The Iraqi full-back must remain disciplined defensively while also preventing Mané from drifting into dangerous positions.

If Mané finds the space to operate between the lines, Senegal could create numerous opportunities.

2. Ismaila Sarr vs Merchas Doski

After an outstanding performance against Norway in which he scored twice, Ismaila Sarr enters this fixture full of confidence. The Senegal winger remains one of the quickest players in the competition and possesses the ability to change games through his direct running and clinical finishing.

Merchas Doski will have the difficult task of preventing Sarr from finding space down the flank. The Iraqi defender must maintain concentration throughout the ninety minutes, as even the smallest lapse could allow Sarr to exploit his blistering pace. This contest has the potential to shape the outcome of the match.

If Sarr continues the form he displayed in Senegal’s previous outing, Iraq could struggle to contain him.

1. Nicolas Jackson vs Zaid Tahseen

Nicolas Jackson once again demonstrated his importance by finding the back of the net in Senegal’s previous match against Norway. The Chelsea forward combines explosive pace with intelligent movement inside the penalty area and remains Senegal’s primary focal point in attack. His ability to stretch defensive lines and attack spaces behind defenders makes him a constant danger.

Standing in his way is Zaid Tahseen, who will once again marshal Iraq’s defence against elite opposition. The centre-back faces perhaps his toughest assignment of the tournament as he attempts to contain one of Africa’s most dynamic forwards.

If Jackson can replicate his goalscoring form from the previous match, Senegal will improve their chances of securing the victory they desperately need.
