The Scottish coach was the Red Devils’ manager in 2013.

Sir Alex Ferguson, a legend of Manchester United, will return to the touchline for Giuseppe Rossi’s final match in Florence.

Ferguson finished his 39-year managerial career with 50 trophies when he retired from football managerial duties in 2013. Rossi’s final game is this weekend in Florence, and the Scot will now be back on the touchline managing the game.

Sir Alex Ferguson will once again assume the role of coach, according to Rossi. The position will be for one of the sides at Stadio Artemio Franchi, the home of former club Fiorentina, in the former Manchester United striker’s testimonial farewell. Early in his career, Rossi played for several Serie A clubs before spending three years at Old Trafford and later joining Villarreal. He retired in 2023.

In an interview with the press, Rossi stated: ‘‘Ferguson will be there as a coach. He was my first coach, I signed when I was 17.

“I only did three years with him and played little, but he immediately said yes and this shows what kind of person he is. I did little at United but he treats me like Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 1000 goals.”

Since leaving Manchester United, the 83-year-old has been a regular sight at Old Trafford, where he frequently watches games from the stands. Alex Ferguson has previously made his way back to the touchline for other memorial games.

He has also done media interviews where he was asked about his thoughts on the current United team. In 2019, he oversaw Michael Carrick’s testimonial and the Red Devils’ treble-winning reunion game.

After getting dismissed by INEOS in October, Ferguson might have anticipated that his return would become even more limited. As part of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s cost-cutting drive, the United legend’s tenure as the club’s global ambassador was terminated.

On March 22, Rossi’s farewell match will get underway. Ferguson will be joined by a number of great figures, including Gabriel Batistuta, Luca Toni, Antonio Cassano, and Sebastien Frey.
