South Africa will face Mexico in their opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on June 11.

South Africa has qualified for the FIFA World Cup only four times in its history, including the 2026 edition. On the other three occasions (1998, 2002, 2010), they have been eliminated from the tournament in the group stage.

However, with a very positive performance in the qualifying round, they will be looking forward to scripting history in the 2026 campaign as they return to the global stage after 16 years.

South Africa qualified for the 2026 FIFA World Cup by winning CAF Qualifying Group C. By topping the group, they secured a spot in the summer competition automatically, ahead of Nigeria and Benin. In the World Cup, they are drawn in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Africa.

Hugo Broos started his managerial career at Belgian side RWD Molenbeek. Later, his longest stint came at Club Brugge, where he managed the side from 1991 to 1997. In 2008, he left Belgium to manage Panserraikos for a year. After brief stints at several clubs, he served as Cameron’s manager from February 2016 to December 2017.

Hugo Broos joined Bafana Bafana as the head coach in May 2021. Since then, he has steered South Africa towards historic results and a few controversies. He helped the South African side secure a historic third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Meanwhile, we also fielded Teboho Mokoena, who was ineligible to play in Bafana Bafana’s World Cup qualifier against Lesotho. As a result, three points were deducted from South Africa’s tally, but they still managed to top the group, with a point ahead of Nigeria.

Broos has also become Bafana Bafana’s longest-serving coach. Nevertheless, the 74-year-old will leave the side after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
