South Africa starting lineup vs Canada confirmed for FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32 match

Canada and South Africa have faced each other only once before.

South Africa made history at the 2026 FIFA World Cup by qualifying for the knockout round for the first time. Bafana Bafana had a difficult start to their World Cup campaign, suffering a 2-0 defeat to co-hosts Mexico.

In the opening game, Yaya Sithole and Themba Zwane were also shown straight reds. Sithole returned, but Zwane remains suspended. Hugo Broos’ men played a gritty 1-1 draw against Czechia in their second match while dominating possession against the European side.

Bafana Bafana secured a memorable victory in their final group-stage game. They defeated South Korea 1-0 in a historic clash, courtesy of a goal from Thapelo Maseko. With the win, the 2010 hosts secured the second spot in Group A.

Despite not being the favourites to advance to the next round, Bafana Bafana put up a gallant display, and now they are set to face Canada at the SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, on Sunday, June 28.

Thoughts on the lineup

Bafana captain Ronwen Williams will keep the gloves in the knockout stage. However, he would be expected to replicate the AFCON success on the global level. Khuliso Mudau and Aubrey Modiba will add width in the defence, while Ime Okon and Mbekezeli Mbokazi will play as the two centre-backs in the important clash.

Sphephelo Sithole and Teboho Mokoena will control the tempo of the game while solidifying the tactical framework approved by Hugo Broos for the knockout game.

Teboho Mokoena, who has also scored a goal in the tournament, is set to return after serving a mandatory one-match suspension. Evidence Makgopa will play as the centre forward, with support from Relebohile Mofokeng and Thapelo Maseko on the wings.
