The Gunners now only have two trophies left to win this season.
At St Mary’s Stadium, EFL Championship team Southampton pulled off an incredible 2-1 shock that severely damaged Arsenal’s hopes of a historic campaign.
In a difficult FA Cup quarterfinal match, Mikel Arteta’s team failed to overcome the resilient hosts despite being the favourites to win the game.
After 35 minutes, Ross Stewart took advantage of Ben White’s defensive error to give the Saints the lead, breaking the tie.
Even though Viktor Gyokeres tied the score in the second half, Shea Charles’ late goal guaranteed that the South Coast team would advance to the semi-finals at Wembley.
Southampton take huge dig at Arsenal fans
The Southampton social media administrator was not in the mood for small talk following the historic win. The Saints’ official account made a winning post on X, which ignited the internet when a fan tried to minimise the outcome by writing “fluke win” beneath a joyous post on X (previously Twitter). In response, the Saints’ admin said, “Enjoy your quadruple, pal.”
The response, which went viral right away, ridiculed the unrelenting early-season optimism that Arsenal had to win a clean sweep of trophies. This dream was crushed last month with their loss to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup (EFL Cup) final.
The social message gained enormous popularity on the internet and received hundreds of thousands of likes as rival supporters joined in the ridicule, leaving Arsenal supporters to lament a lost chance to win additional trophies this season.
For Mikel Arteta, who had been leading his team to contend on several fronts, the loss is a painful pill to chew. The Championship opposition have effectively put an end to any remaining rumours of a domestic quadruple or perhaps a treble, as the Gunners have been formally eliminated from the FA Cup.
Even though the north London team’s main priorities had been the Premier League and UEFA Champions League, losing out on a major prize like the FA Cup—especially to a team from a below division—represents a serious psychological setback.
