La Roja on their debut appearance can clinch the bronze medal.

Spain’s women’s team who are playing for the first time in the Olympics have still got a chance to finish the tournament with a bronze medal. The team is stacked with superstars composed of Aitana Bonmati, Jennifer Hermoso and Alexia Putellas, who have fared well in the tournament. After finishing the group stage as table toppers, they were drawn against Colombia in the quarter-finals.

Colombia looked set to win this encounter after having a 2-0 lead with 12 minutes to play. But La Roja staged a late comeback to draw the match and secured their passage to the semi-final courtesy of their 4-2 penalty shootout win. However, they ended up losing to Brazil in the semifinal. It dashed their hopes of winning the gold.

Germany are a familiar team in the Olympics. They won the gold at the Rio 2016 Olympics. However, the team will not be able to fight for the gold this time after suffering a defeat in the semi-final against the USA. After finishing the group stage in second place, they were drawn against Canada in the quarter-final.

Neither team could break the deadlock as the match went to a penalty shootout in which Die Mannschaft emerged victorious. Fresh from their shootout win, Germany were set to face the USA in the semifinal. After being hammered 4-1 in the group stage, Germany had the perfect platform to avenge that loss but ultimately suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to end their hope of winning the gold.

Players to Watch

Aitana Bonmati (Spain)

Aitani Bonmati had an outstanding season with Barcelona women, netting 19 goals for the team from 41 matches while also racking up 18 assists. These numbers are staggering considering the fact she mostly plays as a midfielder. Bonmati for her heroics for Barca was rightfully rewarded with the Ballon d’Or award for an outstanding season. She is a technically gifted player who possesses all the qualities a modern female player needs to have.

Ann-Katrin Berger (Germany)

Ann-Katrin Berger has emerged as a reliable goalkeeper for the German national team after putting on a series of impressive performances between the sticks. Berger was simply outstanding against Canada in the quarter-finals after limiting them to scoring a goal in the initial time followed by becoming the match-winner with some fine stops to win the penalty shootout 4-2.

In the five matches she has played in, Berger has kept two clean sheets and remains on the hunt for another one in this crucial game for the bronze medal.
