However, in the match for a place in the finals, Spain endured defeat. They were up against Brazil. The Brazilians did the damage in the first half itself, as they took a 2-0 lead with them in the tunnel. By the final whistle 4-2 was the scoreline in favour of Brazil.

Anyhow, La Roja can still take home a medal in their debut campaign at the Olympics. They will face Germany for the Bronze medal.

Germany knocked out the reigning champions in the quarter-finals as they defeated Canada. Up next for them was a familiar opponent whom they had met in the group stage, USA. Against USA in the semi-finals, the game was sent to extra time.

In that period, a goal from Sophia Smith helped USA progress further while Germany suffered a setback. Now, the German team will participate in their fourth-ever bronze medal match at the Olympics. They have won all previous three Bronze medal games (2000, 2004 and 2008).
