Two English clubs will fight to lift the Europa League trophy tonight.
Tonight, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United will square off in the sixth all-English European final. We will see these Premier League giants clash in the UEFA Europa League final in the Basque Country.
Strangely, Spurs will play in their third all-English match, while United will remember it as their second European final with domestic familiarity. After a thrilling penalty shootout in Moscow, Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Red Devils to Champions League victory over Chelsea in 2008.
The two teams are the poorest non-relegated teams in the Premier League going into the main event. Hence, this match proves to be an unpredictable encounter between two sides who have endured a terrible season.
Based on point totals, both current teams have been proven to be the worst versions of their respective clubs since the competition’s inception.
Europa League success might not be enough to hide the obvious gaps in Manchester United’s illustrious history. Nevertheless, after going 17 years without a trophy celebration, Spurs’ triumph in Bilbao might prove to be transcendent.
Supercomputer predicts Europa League 2024-25 final winner
The all-English final tonight is predicted by the supercomputer to be a close and competitive match with little separating the two teams.
Opta presently ranks Tottenham as a marginal favourite, with Spurs winning 50.3% of the 10,000 simulations the supercomputer ran to predict the result. Therefore, United’s chances of winning the trophy are 49.7%.
Ange Postecoglou’s assured reaffirmation in September that he “always” wins a trophy in his second campaign may have convinced the computer. Although Erik ten Hag was in charge of the first match at Old Trafford, which was won by the visitors 3-0, Spurs have defeated United in all three of their encounters this season.
Given United’s history in the finals, heritage obviously works in their favour. But if Spurs win tonight, they will become just the second English team to win this championship three times.
