The FIFA World Cup 2026 opener between Mexico and South Africa saw three red cards.

Two goals, three red cards – the Mexico vs South Africa match had a bit of everything, making it one of the most memorable opening matches in FIFA World Cup history. Both sides saw their players being given marching orders by Brazilian referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio in a match that ended in a 2-0 win for the home side.

The opening match was a one-sided affair, with Mexico dominating the ball. The hosts took an early lead in the ninth minute through Julian Quinones – which was the country’s third-fastest World Cup goal.

South Africa’s task became even tougher when Yaya Sithole was shown a straight red in the second half for a last-man tackle on Brian Gutierrez. El Tri capitalised on their numerical advantage, with Raul Jimenez scoring in the 67th minute.

Themba Zwane was shown a red card after a VAR check in the 84th minute to put Bafana Bafana down to nine men. There was another moment of drama when Cesar Montes was sent off in injury time after denying Khuliso Mudau a goal-scoring opportunity.

While the match ended in a comfortable win for Mexico, head coach Javier Aguirre will be disappointed to lose an important player like Montes. For South Africa’s head coach Hugo Broos, the immediate task will be to replace two key players for the upcoming match against Czechia.

If a player sees a red card at any stage of the World Cup, he will be suspended for the next match. However, if FIFA deems the player’s action to be dangerous, a longer suspension can be imposed depending on the severity of the offence.

Unlike yellow cards, which are reset during the two designated “amnesty periods” in the tournament, suspensions due to red cards remain in effect throughout the FIFA World Cup 2026.

As a result, Sithole and Zwane will miss South Africa’s next match against Czechia, while Montes will be suspended for Mexico’s match against South Korea.
