Graham Potter’s side achieved a thumping win over Tunisia.

Extending their unbeaten streak in the competition’s opening games to five encounters, Graham Potter’s Sweden team defeated Tunisia 5-1 in Monterrey, Mexico. They started their Group F campaign in the 2026 FIFA World Cup with three points.

Sweden demonstrated why they should be here. They made it to the tournament through the play-offs in March despite not winning any of their games in the regular qualification round. They got off to a fast start, leading 2-1 in the first half and winning 5-1 by the end.

Five key takeaways from the match:

5. Sweden record four goals in the World Cup since 2018

Sweden were on fire in their opening FIFA World Cup game. They ran riot against Tunisia and recorded one of their biggest win in the competition’s history. All their star strikers were on the scoresheet to lead the nation to an emphatic win.

The team that had to play the playoffs to secure a place in the tournament looked like a completely different side from what we witnessed in the qualifiers. They made a statement win against Tunisia.

4. Sweden continue their opening World Cup game winning record

Sweden have lost only two of their previous 12 World Cup starting matches (five wins and five draws). They have gone unbeaten in each of the previous four openers (one win and three ties) since losing to Brazil in 1990 (1-2).

They continued this streak after an impressive win over Tunisia with goals from Yasin Ayari (two goals), Viktor Gyokeres, Alexander Isak and Mattias Svanberg.

Viktor Gyokeres and Alexander Isak both contributed to each other’s goals. Gyokeres assisted Isak in scoring his first World Cup goal in the 30th minute. The Liverpool player reciprocated in the 59th minute by setting up Gyokeres.

Since 1966, these strikers are the second pair of Swedish teammates to have both a goal and an assist in a World Cup game.

Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres grabbed their first FIFA World Cup goals during Sweden’s opening match against Tunisia. The lethal attacking combo also helped set up each other’s goals in the comfortable victory.

Isak scored Sweden’s second goal in the 30th minute and contributed two assists. Meanwhile, Gyokeres scored Sweden’s third goal in the 59th minute and registered an assist.

1. Yasin Ayari youngest goalscorer for the Swedes since 1990

Sweden’s first World Cup 2026 match against Tunisia got off to a great start.

Sweden took an early lead at Monterrey Stadium thanks to a brilliant goal by Yasin Ayari, which seemed sure to send them to the top of World Cup Group F.

The midfielder for Brighton & Hove Albion scored his second goal in his 10th senior international match. It was momentous since it shattered a 36-year record. He became their youngest goalscorer in the competition at the age of 22 years and 251 days, since Tomas Brolin in 1990, who was 20 years and 190 days.
