Amad Diallo scored the match-winner in the 90th minute.

The Ivory Coast national football team battled it out against the Ecuador national football team in their opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The high-intensity game took place at the Philadelphia Stadium.

The Elephants did put in a top show. It helped them secure three points in Group E of the mega competition. Germany are at the top after their 7-1 win against the debutants Curacao.

La Tri looked vulnerable at points, but they did put up a strong fight. However, it was not enough. They now must try to win their last two matches to get past the group stage.

It is not going to be an easy journey for them ahead. They are now going to be under pressure for their next one.

Five important things we learned:

1. Yan Diomande starts on the right flank

The 19-year-old put in a sensational performance in his debut World Cup game. He started on the right flank, which is not his usual position. He is a left-winger and has been a crucial player for RB Leipzig.

From creating chances to being an absolute goal threat, Yan Diomande can also be a top performer when he is not playing in his normal position.

2. Luck played an important role

Despite multiple attempts on the goal, the Ecuadorian national football team failed to fire the ball at the back of the net. Many of their shots were sent away after denting the woodwork, too. They must now re-evaluate their strategies in the final third.

The upcoming games are not going to be easy for them. The Elephants, on many occasions, were lucky not to concede a goal in this one.

3. Super Sub Amad Diallo

The Manchester United star helped the Ivory Coast national football team after scoring the match-winning goal in the 90th minute. Amad Diallo was subbed on to the field in the 56th minute. He played an important role in the final third.

His goal was crucial. The Elephants now have three points on board.

4. Ecuador failed to capitalise

The South American nation looked strong in the first half. They must work on putting in better efforts in the final third. Their finishing can be better.

La Tri must know this by now. For their remaining games, Ecuador cannot make the same mistakes, or they will bid a goodbye to their chance at the World Cup.

5. Group E might have its winners

The Ivory Coast defeated Ecuador 1-0. They now have three points in the bag. Germany are on top after taking down Curacao.

The Elephants will be confident for their remaining games. They are likely to see themselves getting past the group stage alongside the DFB Team.

La Tri will have to work hard in their remaining games. Curacao’s debut was very close to a nightmare. They conceded seven goals, but were also able to find the net once.

Which teams are in Group E of the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Curacao, Germany, Ivory Coast and Ecuador.

Who scored the first goal for Ivory Coast in the FIFA World Cup 2026?

Amad Diallo against Ecuador.
