PSG become one of the rare clubs this century to reach consecutive UCL finals.

After Paris Saint-Germain’s (PSG) spectacular UEFA Champions League victory in 2024–2025, many commentators projected a period of dominance.

Luis Enrique’s team has once again reached the UCL final, and they will be looking to win it for the second time. Throughout the competition’s history, a small number of teams have dominated the continent on several occasions, solidifying their status as the game’s all-time greats.

We list all of the known European teams that have reached back-to-back Champions League finals this century.

Manchester United have already participated in five Champions League finals, with three victories in 1969, 1999, and 2008. At the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, a star-studded United squad overcame a goal deficit to defeat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the 99 final, which would go down as one of the best finals in the competition’s history.

Moreover, they are only the second English club to play in back-to-back Champions League finals this century. Unfortunately they lost both of them and against the same opponents.

5. Bayern Munich (2012 and 2013)

Bayern Munich experienced a period of dominance at the biggest competition of European football under Jupp Heynckes, who led the club to consecutive Champions League finals. The first final came in 2012 when they faced Chelsea. They suffered a heartbreaking defeat on penalties in their own backyard.

However, the club bounced back and reached another final the following year. This time, they faced their league rivals Borussia Dortmund, defeating them by a narrow 2-1 margin in the final.

4. Real Madrid (2016 and 2017)

With 15 titles—more than twice as many as any other side in the competition’s existence—Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid are the most successful team in UEFA Champions League history. However, for a brief period, Los Blancos endured a patchy run in top European competition and couldn’t go further in the competition.

Their fine run came in the 2013-14 season when they lifted the trophy for the first time since 2001-02. In 2016, they once again clinched the trophy. Then they managed to do it once again in 2017, winning it consecutive times.

Madrid’s dominance persisted. They reached the final in 2017 and lifted the trophy. They continued the trend the following year in 2018, winning back-to-back Champions League trophies this century.

The Spanish team’s hegemony in the tournament has been unbeatable. They remain one of the best teams in Champions League history.

2. Liverpool (2018 and 2019)

On the European scene, Liverpool have been the most successful English team. In 1977, 1978, 1981, 1984, 2005, and 2019, they emerged victorious. The Reds are one of the best sides in the competition’s history, having six trophies to show off.

Moreover, they have also been among the clubs to secure consecutive places in Champions League finals. Their first final since 2005 came in 2018, where they lost to Real Madrid. Once again, the Reds managed to reach another final in the following year.

This time, winning the trophy by beating Tottenham 2-0.
