The Belgium goalkeeper suffered a relapse in his comeback from an ACL injury

As Real Madrid prepare for the season’s final Clasico against Barcelona on Sunday, they will be aware that a win will virtually put an end to the LaLiga title battle. Due to two starters experiencing minor niggles, their preparations have been significantly hampered.

Dani Carvajal did not show up for training on Friday, but Marca stated that he returned to the team on Saturday. Instead, Ferland Mendy was not present due to muscular stress, which may have affected his suitability for El Clasico. If healthy, he would be a sure starter, but Fran Garcia might now be counted on.

Thibaut Courtois’s attendance during Real Madrid’s training session was another first. It was anticipated that the Belgian custodian would not play again until the preseason after suffering his second knee injury of the year last month. But he did participate in the session, which is a big plus for Carlo Ancelotti.

Although Courtois is doubtful to play against Barcelona, he might return in the last few weeks of Real Madrid’s campaign. Even if he does make a comeback, Andriy Lunin is running a great campaign, therefore it might be hard for him to unseat him.

When examinations in March indicated that Courtois had a damaged meniscus in his right knee, the athlete sobbed and departed the training area.

Thibaut Courtois suffered setback during comeback from ACL injury

The Belgian had previously missed the entire season after ripping his left knee’s ACL back in August, so the fresh injury appeared to be a season-long absence. Surgery was probably necessary to recover from a meniscus injury, but he wasn’t able to prevent having the same issue again.

After recuperating from one of the most severe injuries in football over the past seven months, Courtois was just a few weeks away from playing again. Carlo Ancelotti, the manager of Real Madrid, anticipated his return following the March international break.

In addition to missing the remainder of the club season, Courtois’ absence from the Belgian team’s summer participation at Euro 2024 is very definitely guaranteed. His prospects of participating in that competition were already remote due to a recent dramatic dispute with Red Devils manager Domenico Tedesco.

While Courtois’s absence hasn’t hurt Real Madrid’s chances of winning La Liga, his calibre and wealth of experience would have been invaluable as they advanced through the Champions League and will play Bayern Munich in the semifinals the following month.
