The former German international recently joined the Canadian side, the Vancouver Whitecaps.
After previously praising Cristiano Ronaldo, Thomas Müller said he now views Lionel Messi as the greatest player of all time.
Muller, the most recent high-profile addition to the Vancouver Whitecaps, made a firm statement in the enduring “GOAT” debate in an interview with MLS.
The former Bayern Munich star has now formally proclaimed Messi to be the best player in the history of the game, despite his prior preference for Real Madrid and Manchester United great Ronaldo. After years of intense combat against both players on the largest stages, he has made an unexpected change in opinion.
Muller now prefers Messi over Ronaldo in the GOAT debate
Muller responded as follows when asked to discuss the GOAT controversy during the interview:
“Lionel Messi is the GOAT. In my first 10 years as a professional player, I would have chosen Cristiano Ronaldo, but since the 2022 World Cup with Argentina, it’s been Messi for me. Now, as I get older and more romantic myself, playing style and aesthetics are more important to me than individual performance, work ethic, and so on.”
He further added: “Both are absolutely crazy. I don’t know why it worked so often against him [Messi].”
Given his illustrious past against both superstars, Muller’s decision is especially remarkable. He suffered a series of unforgettable losses to Messi’s Barcelona while he was with Bayern, including the infamous 8-2 thumping in the 2020 Champions League.
He was a member of the German national team that won the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina. Muller had freely acknowledged in a prior interview that he selected Ronaldo because he “had good stats against Messi, but not against Ronaldo.”
However, as he has grown older, his standards for success have shifted from being solely based on data and statistics to being more philosophical.
According to Muller, who is the goat?
He feels Messi is now the goat.
Why did he change his mind recently over that?
Because of Messi winning the World Cup.
Has Messi faced Muller in the World Cup final?
Yes, Germany and Argentina played in the 2014 World Cup final, which the former won.
