One of the most underrated players of his generation has been the German forward.

Thomas Muller ended his international football career following Germany’s exit from Euro 2024. Hosts Germany lost to eventual champions Spain in the quarterfinals with a 2-1 scoreline at the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Stuttgart.

The match was a closely contested affair, with Dani Olmo giving Spain a 1-0 lead early in the second half, which was followed by Florian Wirtz bagging a last-ditch equaliser for Germany in the dying minutes to take the game into extra time. However, Die Mannschaft suffered a heartbreaking end to their home tournament as supersub Mikel Merino scored a late winner to win the match 2-1 for Spain.

This quarterfinal defeat crushed Germany’s dream of clinching their record fourth Euro title in front of their fans and also brought an end to Thomas Muller’s international career.

Muller was primarily used as a substitute in his last international competition for Germany, making just two appearances off the bench, wherein he managed to register a single assist.

Ever since his debut for Germany in 2010, Thomas Muller enjoyed an incredible international career. He scored an impressive 45 goals in 131 caps, making him the third-most-capped player in the nation’s history, only behind the likes of Miroslav Klose and Lothar Matthäus. He made his international debut in Germany’s 1-0 defeat to Argentina during a 2010 friendly match.

During this period, Muller has also managed to win an international trophy with Die Mannschaft: 2014 FIFA World Cup. Muller participated in four World Cups throughout his career (2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022).

During the 2010 World Cup, Muller finished as the joint top goal scorer of the tournament with five goals and also recorded three assists. Owing to his outstanding performances, he won the Golden Boot and the Best Young Player awards.

Muller ultimately won the coveted World Cup title with Germany in 2014, where they defeated Argentina 1-0 in the final. Muller enjoyed a stellar World Cup campaign yet again, as he was an instrumental player in the national team setup, scoring five goals in the process.

After bagging five goals in successive World Cup editions (2010 & 2014), he became only the third player to score at least five goals in each of his first two World Cups.

The 34-year-old forward also participated in four European Championships throughout his career (2012, 2016, 2021 and 2024), but unfortunately never managed to win one, with Germany’s best finishes in the tournament being only until the semifinal stages.

Thomas Muller possessed a unique skill set of incredible versatility, a fantastic work rate and exceptional footballing intelligence that made him a valuable asset for his country. With his international retirement, Germany are undoubtedly losing a legendary figure who was one of the greatest servants of their nation.
