The Spanish midfielder is enjoying a productive season with the Catalan club.
Former Real Madrid star Toni Kroos has revealed who he believes is Barcelona’s most valuable player right now. Kroos had a trophy-filled decade in the Spanish city, winning five UEFA Champions League wins and four LaLiga titles.
Ever since he announced his retirement from football, Madrid have lost a key orchestra in their midfield, and that has affected them this season.
He is considered one of the best midfielders of all time, and he, together with Modric and Casemiro, were the key to Real Madrid’s dominance both at home and in Europe.
But the 35-year-old has given his verdict on who he thinks is the best midfielder in Europe currently, and it won’t go down well with Madrid fans.
Hansi Flick has already defeated Carlo Ancelotti three times this season in all competitions, and Barcelona leads LaLiga by four points at this juncture. Kroos’ former squad has to do something exceptional when they travel to Catalonia.
As the driving forces of their trophy treble quest in 2025, Flick’s all-star front trio of Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal have excelled throughout the season.
Even if those three are now topping the Ballon d’Or chances, Kroos is clear about who Barcelona’s key guy is—and it should come as no surprise that it’s a fellow midfielder.
He’s the best in the world in his position: Toni Kroos on Pedri
Speaking to Marca, the Los Blancos icon said: “He’s the best in the world in his position. For me, a player like Pedri is more important than Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, or Lewandowski. They’re the ones who decide the outcome of matches, but to achieve that, Pedri is currently the best player in the world in his position.
Pedri, in general, is a player you’ll miss when he’s not playing, no matter who you’re playing against. He doesn’t just score goals, he doesn’t just provide assists. He offers solutions.
“I’ve been watching what Pedri is doing this season, and in the Champions League alone, he’s outplaying his opponents in every single game. In La Liga, he’s even more extreme! He’s been beating defenders an average of 11 to 12 times per game, which is the hardest thing for a midfielder to do.
He’s the best. And if you lose a player like him, you’ll notice! Pedri is one of the few midfielders in his position who has the gift of being able to dribble past someone in short spaces. A player like Pedri helps you in every phase of the game.”
