Uruguay have developed into one of the best South American teams over the years, with superstars such as Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani in the team’s starting eleven. In the coming years, it seems that the new generation has some great footballers who will dominate the world.

They have already brought glory to the Nation with the Under 20 World Cup they won in Argentina. The team’s future looks bright because of these young players who are beginning to make a name for themselves abroad. 

Now, Let’s take a look at the top 10 most promising Uruguayan Under 21 talents:

10. Anderson Duarte (20y, LW)- Defensor SC

He has emerged as one of the most exciting talents in Uruguay, where he plays for Defensor Sporting. The player also played an important role in Uruguay’s recent Under 20 World Cup triumph. His team advanced to the finals when he scored the winner against Israel in the semi-final. In 2021, he made his debut with the team and has since made 55 appearances, scoring 12 goals in those games. 

9. Franco González (19y, AM) – Peñarol

The young attacking midfielder seems to be enjoying his football at the moment as he has grown rapidly. As part of the national team’s recent World Cup success, he contributed significantly to the victory. His vision and creativity have been outstanding as he uses his low centre of gravity to easily dribble past opponents. In the seven appearances he has made this season, he has scored one goal for the team. 

8. Matías Abaldo (20y, RW)- Club de Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata

Abaldo joined Gimnasia in Argentina after a loan from Defensor Sporting. Despite being just 20 years old, he has already won the Segunda Division and Copa Uruguay with his parent club, as well as a gold medal from the Under 20 World Cup. Using his pace, he is easily able to get past opponents, while dribbling past them with his tricks. If he can fulfil his potential in a positive way, he will have a bright future. 

7. Thiago Helguera (18y, DM) – Club Nacional

Despite only being 18 years old, he has already become a valuable member of the team. He possesses exceptional qualities as a defensive midfielder. In addition to being calm and composed on the ball, he breaks up play with timely interceptions and tackles that break up play. In order to reduce pressure on the teenager, the Coach has been integrating him into the team slowly. He is one player that you should keep an eye on as he has all the tools to become a world class player. 

6. Álvaro Rodríguez (19y, ST) – Real Madrid CF

Despite making a handful of appearances for Los Blancos’ first team, the youngster already has a prolific record for the Castilla team. He has so far made 10 appearances for the Real Madrid main team. Carlo Ancelotti shows a lot of faith in him for the future as he is a permanent fixture in the first team training sessions. In the future, he could become the main man for the national team. 

5. Facundo González(20y, CB) – Sampdoria

He has made 28 appearances for Sampdoria in the Serie B league as of now. Juventus moved quickly to secure his services from Valencia, so he looks set to play a prominent role in the future. In his current form, he looks quite comfortable at the back, calm and composed on the ball and doesn’t shy away from tackling. 

4. Sebastián Boselli (20y, CB) – River Plate

He is a Uruguayan international who plays for River Plate in Argentina. As a 20-year-old, he appears mature beyond his age and has slotted straight into the team’s back four. River Plate were quick to secure his services after his impressive showing at the back for Defensor Sporting. River Plate believes he has all the qualities to play a prominent role in the future. He has played 10 times for the team so far, and he hopes to become a regular. 

3. Alan Matturo (19y, CB) – Genoa

After signing for Genoa in the winter window of 2022, Alan Matturo has made seven appearances. He is still raw and will get better with time as he has the potential to become one of the best center backs in the future. The young player was a youth product of the famous Defensor Sporting team, with whom he made 25 appearances before moving. During the Under 20 World Cup, he played a crucial role. 

2. Matías Arezo (21y, ST) – Granada CF

He has made 13 appearances for Granada this season in the La Liga but is yet to open his account for the team. He had a tremendous campaign last term on loan with Club Atletico Peñarol where he netted 22 goals in 40 matches to become one of the most in demand youngsters. He has shown flashes of his potential this term and with time he has the quality to evolve into a more consistent performer. What matters is he is getting the minutes to help him develop. 

1. Luciano Rodriguez (20y, RW) – Liverpool FC Montevideo

He has developed into one of the most exciting talents around the world in the past few years and has been scouted by multiple clubs. With 51 appearances for Atletico Progreso and 49 for Liverpool FC where he has developed further, he already has over 100 senior football appearances. He scored three goals in 11 appearances for Liverpool FC this season. While still raw, he has the speed and technique to score brilliant goals.
